AFC South 2011 Predictions

Picking the winner of the AFC South has been fairly routine for several years now thanks to one man Peyton Manning and as long as he is fit then the Colts will start the season as justifiable favourites for yet another AFC South title. If and its a massive if Peyton Manning recovers from his surgery for the new season then we see the Colts being triumphant again in 2011.

1 Indianapolis Colts – The Colts overcame a tough schedule last season finishing with a late flurry to for a 10-6 record.  2011 has not been a whole lot kinder as they have the tough NFC South to play, but so do their division opponents. They have not been particularly active in the free agency, concentrating their efforts on retaining rather than changing, and with only 5 draft choices in 2010 they have not been able to load up with Rookie talent. What they did draft looks spot on though and Anthony Castonzo should be a regular on the offensive line for many years. Overall we expect the Colts to go 11-5 and take the division.

2 Houston Texans – The Texans have never made the post season and given that its necessary to get past the Colts to do so its somewhat understandable. They have some talent particularly on offense with Andre Johnson being one of the leagues elite receivers, and look well stacked at running back now that Ben Tate is fit again. He might struggle to regain his position as starter thanks to Brian Fosters excellent season in 2010 and the rest of the corp look strong. If the Texans can sort out their secondary then a winning season is a possibility. They passed up the opportunity to address this in the draft early on going for the D line instead, however Brandon Harris (who we saw going earlier was a nice pick up deep into the second round. Overall the problems at corner remain in our opinion and although Kareem Jackson might step up this year it looks like costing them. Our view is that they might sneak a winning season but we feel its more likely that they will finish 8-8.

3 Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jags had a pretty good 2010 and briefly threatening to unseat the Colts, however when the pressure came to bear they crumbled and they ended up at 8-8 thanks to losses in their final 3 games. Given they had the look of a team in transition this was an admirable achievement. In the draft they stepped up to grab Blaine Gabbert at 10 and this looks like a solid move, however with very few other draft picks available they have not been able to do much else. They were not helped by the loss of star running back Maurice Jones-Drew, towards the end of last season and his fitness level is likely to be key to their success in 2011. Overall we don’t think they have gotten any better and think with this schedule they will do well to match last season. Our prediction for them is 6-10.

4 Tennessee Titans – The Titans started well in 2010 and managed some impressive early wins in going 5-2, however then the wheels fell off big tome and they slumped to a 6-10 finish. They have parted company with Vince Young and Kerry Collins leaving Rookie Jake Locker as possible starter, although ex Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck might get the nod early. We were not overly impressed with their draft (Locker aside) and the franchise looks a little at odds with its self at the moment. The Titans will play hard and with Chris Johnston and Nate Washington probably going to be available they could score a few points. Overall we think they need this season to adjust and they will need a good draft in 2012 before they can get back to a winning season. Our prediction is for a 5-11 finish.

AFC West 2011 Predictions

The AFC West was one of the weaker divisions in 2010 – not helped by the surprisingly poor showing by the San Diego Chargers, who self destructed into finish 9-7 from a schedule which should have seen them getting a 1st round bye. Still it was nice to see the Chiefs making progress and Oakland managed a rare divisional sweep despite finishing 8-8. 2011 looks like being just as interesting, however a tougher schedule means its unlikely that Kansas will be in the post season again.

1 San Diego Chargers – San Diego finished with the top ranked offense and defense in 2010 but a series of unaccountable errors left them 9-7 lamending what might have been had it not been for goal line fumbles. They have lost Shawn Merriman but that shouldn#t be too much of a problem given he has looked a bit out of sorts in the last couple of seasons and they have the depth and talent to overcome such things. They have been quiet on the free agency front, seming content with what they have got and with Floyd and Jackson now seemingly secored at Wide receiver there is no reason to beleive that Philip Rivers will not put up Pro Bowl numbers again this year.  Their schedule is not overly taxing and they should hit the bye week at 4-1  and we expect them to finish at 12-4.

2 Kansas City Chiefs – The Chiefs are starting to look rather good, and although they still rely on proven veterans such as Mike Vrabel and Thomas Jones, they do have a lot of young talent coming through. Their 1st round draft pick Jon Baldwin will give Matt Cassel someone to throw to and in Jones and Jammal Charles they have the running game too. Overall its too much to expect them to repeat the division win however they could still have a winning season and we them to finish 9-7; not enough for a wild card but still credible and they could be a team to watch in 2012.

3 Oakland Raiders – The Raiders look to be on their way back too after the dismal years which followed their Superbowl loss to Tampa. We thought an 8-8 season was on the cards last year, however this year we feel the loss of Nnamdi Asomugha and Zach Miller has weakened the team. The signing of Kevin Boss is a bit of a help but we dont see any major impact from their 2011 draft choices and thing a 6-10 season beckons.

4 Denver Broncos – The return of John Elway will be a big boost to the Franchise, however it is unlikely to be enough to instantly turn around their fortunes. Still there is plenty to like about the Broncos with Tim Teebow and Kyle Orton giving them QB options, and the drafting of Vom Miller has strengthened the defense (although we think they should have taken Dareus). They have plenty of talent at WR and TE  and if they can sort out the defense and their running game then they could pull off a few surprises in 2011. However we think this is a rebuilding season and a 5-11 finish is likely.

2011 AFC East Prediction

The AFC East looks like being a two team race again in 2011 with the Patriots and the Jets both looking liklely to make a serious run into the post season. This is how we see the season panning out.

1 New England Patriots – The Patriots look the strongest team in the AFC going into the 2011 season having added veterans Ochocinco and Haynesworth to a reasonably strong draft. Given they have plenty of talent already on the roster and a lot of good young players coming through we cant rule out another 14-2 season and think the divisional title is a gimme. Their schedule looks ok again despite having the NFC East to play and the improving AFC West to face. With The Steelers and Colts both wining their divisions last season there are some nice games to look forward to as well.  Their schedule looks a little tough for another 14-2 to us and a couple of slips are likely on their way. Our final prediction is a 13-3 season with their losses likely to came at the Steelers, Jets and Eagles. Overall we rank New England as clear best in the AFC and expect them to contest this years Superbowl.

2 New York Jets – The Jets made the AFC Championship game again last season, where they proceeded to self destruct against the Steelers, and a tilt at the Superbowl looks on the cards again in 2011. They were thwarted in their attempt to sign Nandi Asomugha who would have added a bit of extra height at Corner, however since they have kept Comartie their secondary looks solid and is possibly one of the best in the NFL. The Jets were solid enough defensively last season, and we were a little surprised that they didn’t put more effort into sorting out the offense which lacked ideas in 2010 in our opinion. Their red zone offense was poor and ranking 22nd in passing yards was no where near what was expected. The signing of veterans Dereck Mason and Plaxico Burress are short term measures at best and they will need to address this area in next years draft. With Santonio Holmes resigning they should do ok offensively and an improvement on their 202 yards a game average in 2010 is expected.

They were a bit short on draft picks in 2010 thanks to their recent spending spree, however picking up Jeremy kerley in round 5 might at least see them prove their punt return stats, and They did add some extra defensive prowess which will help with what should be a long season. Overall we expect the Jets to finish the same as last season on 11-5 and take the 5th seed. An AFC Championship match up against the Patriots is not out of the question.

3 Buffalo Bills – The Bills are getting better – not a lot better but they are definitely improving. Being stuck with the Pats and Jets makes things tough however we can see them improving on last seasons 4-12 fourth place and think a 6-10 season is possible. They drafted well on Defense and Darius will give them a nice boost, however being hard to score against is no good if you cant score yourselves. The Bills are still 2-3 years away from challenging for the division but finishing third in this division is no disgrace.

4 Miami Dolphins – The Dolphins nicked the division in 2008 tying the patriots at 11-5, however they failed to build on that momentum and have finished 7-9 both times since. Their schedule looks mighty tough and although we were impressed with their drafting of Mike Pouncey, there is no point having a great guard if the QB he is guarding can’t make use of the time. Unless they address this in the remaining free agency we expect it to be a long season for Dolphin fans. Still they could easily sort this next season as getting the no one draft pick is a strong possibility and Stanford’s Andrew Luck will be waiting for them. Who said there is no silver lining.  We predict a 3-13 finish for the Dolphins

So Overall for us its:

1 New England Patriots

2 New York Jets

3 Buffalo Bills

4 Miami Dolphins
