Thursday Night Football Jags at Atlanta

Both Jacksonville and Atlanta are comming into this game after good wins, with both coming from behind. Then Jags were 14-0 down at one stage, before Maurice Jones-Drew got to work and his 4 TDs helped them to a season best 41-14 win. Atlanta also showed great battling qualities to  come from 23-7 down against the Panthers scoring 24 unanswered second half points to run out 31-23 winners. Given the overall form of the two teams though this should be a fairly easy Atlanta win, and despite the Jaguars being able to shut down the passing game pretty well they will also have to stop Michael Turner on the ground and we cant see this happening. A further problem for  Jacksonville is that they are not particularly endowed with receivers and rely on their running game, which could stutter against the Falcons much improved defense so points could be scarce.

Overall we dont see a lot of points in this one brobably below 30 total and we expect Atlanta to put themselves into pole position for a Wild Card with a 10-14 point win.

Saints Wrap Up Post Season Place with Big Win At The Falcons

Drew Brees threw a late TD pass to snatch a 17-14 win in the Georgia Dome against divisional rivals the Atlanta Falcons to clinch the reigning Super Bowl champions return to the post season.

The Saints swept into an early 10-0 lead however Matt Ryan pulled the scores back to 10-7 going into the half, and when Brees threw an interception, which Chauncey Davis returned for a TD it looked like Atlanta had the No 1 seed in the bag.

However New Orleans rallied and their narrow win was well deserved. They put up 368 total yards including 296 passing while holding Atlanta to a total of 215. The Falcons have what on paper is an easy game against Carolina next week so should end up as No 1 seeds overall, however it is not clear if they are the best team in the NFC and the two sides could very easily meet again in the post season.

Big Win For The Atlanta Falcons

With one minute and 5 seconds left things were looking good for our bet on the Ravens, however a few seconds latter things changed big style as Atlanta drove the ball 80 yards to grab a late touch down in a game they probably deserved to win on the balance of play.

The Ravens were untypically subdued in the first half and only had the ball for 9 minutes as the Falcons ran up a 10 point lead. However they seemed to wake up in the second half and despite trailing 13-0 and 20-7 they managed to battle back and took a 21-20 lead when Joe Flacco hit Todd Heap from 9 yards.

This leaves Atlanta 5-0 at home and puts them in a very strong position going into the final stretch and probably just about elevates them into No 1 position in the NFC, while the Ravens at 6-3 can now look forward to a fairly easy run in and will barring a self inflicted disaster still be playing in the post season. Could we have seen the dress rehearsal for this years Superbowl?

Thursday Night Games Return With Falcons V Ravens

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens number one draft ...
Image via Wikipedia

Week 10 of the NFL season sees the return of the Thursday night game a moment dreaded by football widows everywhere. Still for those of us who love the game more than our spouses, we have a cracker to look forward to when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Atlanta Falcons. With both franchises currently top of their respective divisions and expecting great things this season both sides will be up for it and on paper they match up pretty well.

The Falcons success this season has been built on running the football and  stopping the run. This has allowed them to scrape wins in most of their games and looking at their record its possibly not as impressive as it looks and they have came up short when facing the stronger teams having lost to the Eagles and a Roethlisberger less Pittsburgh. Of their 6 wins four have been against struggling teams and they were lucky to beat New Orleans in OT in their most impressive win to date. We are not saying they are in a false position, only that we are not convinced they are genuine Super Bowl contenders.

The Ravens were our preseason Super Bowl tip and although they are top of a tough AFC North they too have displayed some weaknesses. Still their win record also at 6-2 has looked a little more impressive with wins over the Jets, Miami & Pittsburgh. They also look more balanced, thanks to Joe Flacco now having more options out wide.

Their secondary is strong this year meaning the Falcons will have to beat them on the ground, no mean feat against their defensive line and given this we think the Ravens can pull this one off so consolidating their position as one of the favourites for the AFC Crown. Both should make the playoffs however on the night Baltimore should win a close game by 3-7 points.

2010 NFL Week 3 Results Some Interesting Ones

Atlanta Falcons logo

Week Three proved to be a tough to call as we predicted and already heads have rolled in San Fransisco and Buffalo.  Its still early days but already several teams look likely to improve significantly on last season.

Our  game of the week was the Atlanta Falcons tremendous OT win at the Saints. To be fair if New Orleans had a decent field goal kicker then they would have won it. Hopefully Garrett Hartley will learn to handle the pressure, but a few more performances like this and his NFL career could be a short one.

Best result of the week was Pittsburgh’s move to 3-0 without Big Ben. Charlie Batch successfully swapped the clip board for the Pig skin and grasped is 15 minutes of fame nicely finishing  12 from 17  for 186 yards  and 3 touchdowns. His QB rating of 106.5 would have been much higher had he not thrown 2 interceptions. He will be starter again next week and if he can guide them to a 4-0 start with a win over the Ravens then he could argue he should keep the job.

Disaster of the week is a joint award for San Diego & Green Bay, both of whom somehow conspired to lose games they should have won. San Diego once again came up short on their travels despite dominating the game. The Chargers had 518 yards of offense but shot themselves in the foot again with 5 turnovers and 83 yards of penalties. Despite this they only lost thanks to a 99 yard kick off return, the second of the game from Leon Washington. They are either the unluckiest team in the NFL so far or the most complacent and over confident only time will tell which it is.

Green Bay had a much harder task playing away to the 2-0 Chicago Bears but again despite dominating the game lost out due to a sloppy fumble and silly penalties – they gave up 152 yards total and the pass interference call on Morgan Burnett was instrumental in setting up the winning kick.

The Seahawks are now just about favourites for the incredibly weak NFC West and the Bears despite being a little lucky are 3-0 with wins over both the Packers & Cowboys in those stats. This looks like being a very interesting season.

The most relieved fans will be those of Minnesota & Dallas as both finally got off the mark. at 1-2 both still have the chance of fulfilling their preseason billing, however neither can afford too many more losses.
