More Top Players get the Franchise Tag

The uncertainty surrounding the current NFL collective bargaining agreement seems to be having a major effect on the decision making of the teams, with several high profile players being tagged this week.

The latest additions to what is fast becoming a who’s who of top talent includes Baltimores DT Haloti Ngata, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, and most surprisingly Colts Star QB Peyton Manning. Admittedly both Vick and Manning have received the “exclusive” designation preventing them from entering talks with other teams, however if the Collective Bargaining agreement does end in a lock out then a free for all could erupt in the NFL and deep pocketed franchises such as Washington could make a move.

Our view is that none of the franchise tagged players mentioned will be allowed to go and they will all be in their respective teams in 2011, still its a funny game football especially where money is involved.

Big Win For The Atlanta Falcons

With one minute and 5 seconds left things were looking good for our bet on the Ravens, however a few seconds latter things changed big style as Atlanta drove the ball 80 yards to grab a late touch down in a game they probably deserved to win on the balance of play.

The Ravens were untypically subdued in the first half and only had the ball for 9 minutes as the Falcons ran up a 10 point lead. However they seemed to wake up in the second half and despite trailing 13-0 and 20-7 they managed to battle back and took a 21-20 lead when Joe Flacco hit Todd Heap from 9 yards.

This leaves Atlanta 5-0 at home and puts them in a very strong position going into the final stretch and probably just about elevates them into No 1 position in the NFC, while the Ravens at 6-3 can now look forward to a fairly easy run in and will barring a self inflicted disaster still be playing in the post season. Could we have seen the dress rehearsal for this years Superbowl?

Thursday Night Games Return With Falcons V Ravens

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens number one draft ...
Image via Wikipedia

Week 10 of the NFL season sees the return of the Thursday night game a moment dreaded by football widows everywhere. Still for those of us who love the game more than our spouses, we have a cracker to look forward to when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Atlanta Falcons. With both franchises currently top of their respective divisions and expecting great things this season both sides will be up for it and on paper they match up pretty well.

The Falcons success this season has been built on running the football and  stopping the run. This has allowed them to scrape wins in most of their games and looking at their record its possibly not as impressive as it looks and they have came up short when facing the stronger teams having lost to the Eagles and a Roethlisberger less Pittsburgh. Of their 6 wins four have been against struggling teams and they were lucky to beat New Orleans in OT in their most impressive win to date. We are not saying they are in a false position, only that we are not convinced they are genuine Super Bowl contenders.

The Ravens were our preseason Super Bowl tip and although they are top of a tough AFC North they too have displayed some weaknesses. Still their win record also at 6-2 has looked a little more impressive with wins over the Jets, Miami & Pittsburgh. They also look more balanced, thanks to Joe Flacco now having more options out wide.

Their secondary is strong this year meaning the Falcons will have to beat them on the ground, no mean feat against their defensive line and given this we think the Ravens can pull this one off so consolidating their position as one of the favourites for the AFC Crown. Both should make the playoffs however on the night Baltimore should win a close game by 3-7 points.

Baltimore Ravens Slug Out Big Win Against Jets

The Baltimore Ravens outlasted the New York Jets in a game in which defenses were on top most of the time.  The Jets were held to 60 yards passing, throwing up question marks about whether Mark Sanchez has the ability to take New York all the way. The Ravens will also leave this game questioning their offense which managed only 49 yards rushing and couldn’t turn 233 yards through the air into more points. The games only touchdown came from Willis McGahee’s 1 yd run just before the half, and otherwise it was field goals all round as the game ended 10-9 to the Ravens.

Although not a spectacle this game does show is that these teams have superb defenses and teams have ridden a strong defense to the Super Bowl in the past so neither should start worrying too much. They will also be pleased with their big free agency signings with Anquan Bolden leading the receiving for the Ravens with 110 yards and La Danian Tomlinson picking up 62 yards rushing with an average gain of 5.6.

Both sides look playoff bound and there is a good chance they will meet again in the post season.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh Joins Ravens Looking For A Ring

Ex Cincinnati & Seattle Wider Receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has joined the Baltimore Ravens on a 1 year deal adding to their formidable looking offense. He is reportedly here for a chance of winning the Super Bowl, and with the Ravens looking strong both sides of the ball this season he might just get his wish.

His 2009 numbers were not great, but he was playing for the Seahawks so he can be excused one bad season, and since 2004 he sis second in the NFL in catches with 524. This looks like the final piece in the Ravens jigsaw and they are justifiably one of the favourites for the Super Bowl
