Chicago Bears Shut Out Beat Up Miami Dolphins

The Chicago Bears too full advantage of an injury ravaged Miami Dolphins winning 16-0 and in doing so inflicting only the second home shut out for the Dolphins in 40 years.

Tyler Thigpen who started the season as 3rd choice QB showed very little in a game dominated by defense, however he did produce more yards than his more illustrious counterpart Jay Cutler and given that he lost Brandon Marshall early in the game his performance was quite credible.

Star of the game had to be Julius Peppers who had 3 sacks and generally terrorized the Miami offense, and for Miami once again Carlos Dansby looked impressive. Both were acquired in the off season and their old clubs Carolina & Arizona must be wishing they had held on to them given both are having bad seasons.

So where does this leave these teams, well the Bears are improving and with a game against Green Bay still to come effectively have their destiny in their own hands. This was not a particularly impressive performance given Miami’s injury list however, its another win in the column and it wouldn’t be the first time a solid defense has carried a team into the post season.

Miami are too beaten up to compete in the ultra strong AFC East and the chances of them grabbing the no 6 seed look remote unless their squad displays some miraculous healing skills. Still they are moving in the right direction and once they sort their offense they could become a play off team again, probably not before 2012 though.

Chicago Bears at Miami Dolphins Preview

MIAMI - OCTOBER 04: Quarterback Tyler Thigpen...

As Thursday night games go this might not be the most watchable – however it should be interesting and both sides will be keen to grab a win which will keep their seasons on track in tough divisions.

The Dolphins are down to their 3rd string QB with Chad Pennington only lasting 2 plays last Sunday and Chad Henne being doubtful with a knee injury he picked up in the game. Still Tyler Thigpen looked quite composed against the Titans when thrown in and given he will have come on from the game his inclusion might not be the handicap it would appear. Still he will have his hands full with a mean looking Chicago defense, which looks to be improving every game, and this would point towards a fairly low scoring game.

Chicago despite having undoubted quality at QB in Jay Cutler are struggling on offense and it is a bit of a surprise that they are 6-3 in the tough NFC North however all but one of their wins has came against losing teams and they have only won two games by more than a touch down.

We are not convinced by the Bears and tend to agree with the odds makers that Miami are 2 point favourites. We will be having a small wager on the Dolphins at -2 and a small bet on below 39 points total.

Our prediction is a Miami win by 3-7 points.

NFC North 2010 Season Prediction

GREEN BAY, WI - NOVEMBER 01: Quarterback Bret...
Image by Getty Images via @daylife

The NFC North looks like being a two team race again this year as although both Chicago and Detroit are slowly improving they are still lack enough squad depth to make any impact. Still both should improve on 2009.

The big question for 2010 in the NFC North is will Brett Favre be as consistent as last season? If he can rack up the same or better numbers then the Vikings will win the division and should be strong contenders for the Super Bowl. This is a big if and given Green Bay have improved a bit on last year the division could be close.

The Minnesota Vikings have quality in every position and by picking up Lito Sheppard and drafting Chris Cook they have sorted their secondary which was the only slightly weak area on the roster in 2009. The loss of RB Chester Taylor will not affect their offense as rookie Toby Gerhart looks well capable of taking the back up role and their offensive line looks one of the best in the NFL with the left side being particularly strong thanks to the Hitchinson, McKinnie combination. The defense is rock solid both on the line and in the secondary where they have upgraded a bit and it could be argued they have the most complete team in the NFL.

So where could it go wrong? Well Brett Favre could get injured and there would be questions regarding whether Travaris Jackson is capable of winning the big games. Also their schedule is not the easiest i have ever seen with trips to several teams who will have post season aspirations. Still they should rise to the occasion and a repeat of last seasons 12-4 looks on the cards.

The Green Bay Packers have been steadily improving and even back in 2008 when they had a poor season the developing quality was there for all to see. They had an excellent draft getting Bryan Bulaga who will fill a gap on the offensive line and Mike Neal looks like a good fit for their 3-4 defense. The loss of Kampman & Montgomery shouldn’t be too much of a problem and overall their young team look likely to improve and could match their efforts in 2009.  The offensive line still looks a worry and they will have to give Aaron Rogers better protection if he is to carry them deep into the playoffs though. It should be close but Green Bay will probably have to settle for a Wild Card slot again this season.

The Chicago Bears had a poor 2009 finishing 7-9 despite mortgaging their 2010 draft to get QB Jay Cutler from Denver. Picking up Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor has added a little to the squad, but the losses of Ogunleye and Pace sort of negates this. Given they have not been able to draft any impact players its hard to see how they can overhaul the Packers or Vikings. Cutler should have a better season in 2010 (well it would be hard to have a worse one) and they might scrape to 8-8.

The Detroit Lions are slowly starting to build a team but they are still a year or two away from a 50-50 season. They had a great draft picking up one of the best DT  prospects in years in Ndamukong Suh, he will have a huge impact on their D Line, and in Javid best they have a RB with promise. Still two good draft picks dont make a team and they have had another year of comings and goings which will not help build a stable team.  Given that Matt Stafford will be a year wiser and that the addition of Suh will fire up the defense the Lions can probably look forward to a 3-11 or possibly 4-12 season, and who knows they might even manage a divisional win; probably at Chicagos expense.

Overall Predicted Finishing Order

1. Minnesota Vikings

2. Green Bay Packers

3. Chicago Bears

4. Detroit Lions

2009 Finishing Positions

Minnesota Vikings 12-4
Green Bay Packers 11-5
Chicago Bears 7-9
Detroit Lions 2-14

At Last Some Good News For Chicago

Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears
Image via Wikipedia

The Chicago Bears will be heartened by the return to fitness of Brian Urlacher who missed most of the 2009 season with a dislocated wrist. Urlacher who is a 6 time pro-bowler was a big miss last season and the Bears never really managed to replace him. This lack of leadership at middle linebacker contributed to their poor season and if they are to have any chance in an increasingly strong NFC North his presence is going to be vital.

Unfortunately for Bears fans it will probably take a bit more than his return to give them a shot at the division and their best hope is that Brett Favre doesn’t return for berth behind Green Bay.

Chicago Bears Give Up On Orlando Pace

SAN FRANCISCO - NOVEMBER 16: Orlando Pace #76 ...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Just one season after acquiring his services from The St Louis Rams the Chicago Bears have given up on former pro Bowl offensive Tackle Orlando Pace. To be fair at 34 his best years were probably behind him, and he certainly didn’t look the commanding figure of old, only managing to play12 games in 2009. The Bears offensive line looked well below par this year which didn’t help Jay Cutler who was hurried too much resulting in him posting his worst season stats do date.

With no decent draft picks thanks to the Cutler trade the Bears will be anxiously scanning the free agency list as they will need to sort the OL out if they are to mount a serious challenge in the tough NFC North in 2010.
