LSU v Alabama Rematch Looks On The Cards

LSU all but ensured that Alabama would get a rematch with them after they beat the only remaining serious BSC Championship contender Arkansas 41-17 in a game which was much closer than the score would suggest.

The Razorbacks actually went 14-0 up when they returned a fumble for a TD, however the game largely turned on a big play in the second when Tyrann Mathieu ran 92 yards for a TD following a punt. This tied the scores up and LSU then took the momentum back and went in 21-14 up at the half.

Arkansas briefly got to within 4 points in the Third Quarter but LSU added two 4th quarter TDs to cement an impressive win and their position as No 1 in the Rankings.

Alabama had a easy win against last years BSC Champions Auburn and given their only loss this season was a narrow one against LSU, its hard to see them not getting the 2nd place vote. They have also beaten Arkansas and few apart from the SEC haters would argue their credentials as No2. Their top RB Trent Richardson looks well in the running (excuse the pun) for  the Heisman Trophy thanks to his impressive stats which included 203 yards rushing against the Razorbacks.

Our only hope is that the National Championship game is more entertaining for the Neutral than their regular season meeting.

A Weekend of Shocks Looks To Have set Up an All SEC BSC Championship

Just when it looked like the under pressure Big 12 would have something to cheer about this season after all, both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State effectively blew their chances with disapointing losses.

Oklahoma State had a shocking loss against Iowa State who snatched this unlikely win in the second period of OT, and given Iowa’s ranking they will find it hard to claw their ranking place back.

Oklahoma who we thought were a good thing for the BSC this year finally saw their slim chance evaporate thanks to a 45-38 defeat to the Baylor Bears. With an 8-2 record the Sooners will have to settle for one of the other bowls this year.  They are currently behind Kansas state and a loss to the Cowboys in their final game could leave them outside the top 10.

Oregon who looked the most likley beneficiary of a Cowboys slip up also lost against PAC 12 rivals USC and these two now have identical records and both trail Stanford who still have an outside chance.

Houston won again to move to 11-0, however they have had a fairly easy schedule and its hard to see them snatching the second BSC place.

So it looks like its LSU and either a rematch against the Tide (hopefully a better game) or perhaps Arkansas can sneal the place – they play LSU in their last game and ending the Tigers winning season would surely give them the place. The SEC West has sure proved to be the best conference in football in 2011.

Oklahoma State’s BSC Championship Hopes survive a Scare v Kansas State

The Oklahoma State Cowboys rode their luck just a little against the plucky Kansas State Wildcats in what was a great advertisment for the under pressure Big 12. The Wildcats who had seen their own BSC ambitions destroyed by Oklahoma last week again gave up over 50 points, but instead of laying down like they did last week battled to the last second with QB Collin Klein missing 3 chances to tie the game in the last 12 seconds, all from the Cowboys 5 yard line.

The game was as exciting as the LSU one was drab, and Kansas State actually snatched the lead with just over 5 minutes left, however Oklahoma replied 30 seconds latter with a TD and 2 point conversion to go 7 points up. However the drama was not over as Collin Klein ran in the tying TD with 3.18 left.

The Cowboys then snatched the lead again just outside the 2 minute warning and then held off the Wildcats late desperate drive which failed in the red zone.

What a game over 1000 yards of offense 53 1st downs and 6 turnovers as Brandon Weeden set an OSU passing record with 502 yards passing.

Now OSU have their destiny in their own hands while KSU will at least have a reasonable Bowl game to look forward to from a season which they have contributed much to.

No Fireworks As LSU Edge Past Alabama In OT 9-6

This was billed as the game of the Century and well over 100,000 turned up at at Bryant-Denny Stadium to witness the dram. However as so often happens with over hyped games it was more damp squib than fireworks (at least for the neutral viewer) with LSU grabbing the glory and a probably BSC Championship place with an OT Field Goal.

The game was not without drama with both sides throwing 2 interceptions and four missed Alabama field goals. Then throw in a heap of nervous penalties and a few other errors and you had an intriguing if not thoroughly entertaining game.

LSU were held to 91 yards passing against 199 from the Tide, and although defenses looked well on top Nick Sabens Alabama will know they only have themselves to blame for this loss.

With Oklahoma State winning a tough game against Kansas State, and both Stanford and Boise remaining unbeaten, its hard to se the two having a rematch in the BSC Championship, however Stanford do have Oregon next week and Boise have divisional rivals TCU. Stanford could possibly lose against the Ducks, but its almost impossible to conjure up a scenario in which Boise loses to the Horned Frogs.

Further Oklahoma State would have to lose and although a trip to Texas Tech is never a given, the Red Raiders look well out of sorts at the moment.

Overall Alabama’s fate is no longer in their own hands and even though they should win out from here it now looks like LSU v Oklahoma State, Stanford or Boise in the BSC Championship, although still undefeated Houston may still have something to say about that.

Last Chance Saloon for Kansas State

Up until last week the Wildcats looked like a team on a mission, however when they faced their first true task of the season they came up short losing 58-17 to Oklahoma. However they were in this game for most of the 1st half and their second half collapse was somewhat uncharacteristic of a team which has won a lot of game s with determination and big plays.

This weekend they face the No3 Oklahoma State Cowboys, who have not quietly moved into the no 3 rank. If Kansas State could pull off a shock here then there is still an outside chance of them featuring in one of the big Bowls, however we feel that their lack of true talent has been exposed finally and although we will as neutrals keep our fingers crossed for them, we cant seen them winning this one , and sadly a season which promised so much could end with them missing out on a top 25 BSC ranking.
