2011 NFL Draft Preview: Top 10 Players Dallas Cowboys Should Now Be Targeting

The Super Bowl will finally happen today in Dallas, TX, and the Dallas Cowboys will be home watching.

After the team, and the whole league, had Super Bowl aspirations coming into this season, the Cowboys will be forced to watch either the Packers or the Steelers hoist the Lombardi Trophy on their home turf.

Jerry Jones has already shown his displeasure for his team this season. It started with the firing of head coach Wade Phillips during the regular season.

Now Jerry Jones and his brass must make some major decisions for April’s draft. The Cowboys obviously have a lot of needs to be filled come September.

Here are 10 players that the Cowboys should keep their eyes on come April.

New Orleans Saints & New York Jets Both Win Thankgiving Games

The New Orleans Saints kept the pressure on the Atlanta Falcons & Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South with a hard fought win at the Dallas Cowboys. After dominating the first half they had to come from behind for a 30-27 win. This effectively ended any slim hopes that Dallas had of making the playoffs, however they have played well enough of late to suggest that Jason Garrett is worthy of getting the Head Coach position on a permanent basis.

The New York Jets had a much easier time of it beating the disappointing Cincinnati Bengals who only managed 163 yards of total offense. The final score was 26-10 and overall was a fair reflection of the game. The Jets look certainties for the post season and if they can hold off the Patriots and get the No1 seed they will be hard to stop. Cincinnati can look forward to a nice early draft pick and questions need to be asked about the coaching staff as it is hard to fathom how a team with so much quality on paper at least can play so badly.

NFL Thanksgiving Games 2010

Thanksgiving already and we have been blessed with three great games all of which will have a bearing on the post season aspirations.  The games are:

New England Patriots at Detroit Lions - The preseason whispers regarding the impending demise of the Patriots now looks well wide of the mark and a win here will put them in pole position for a wild card at least going into the final stretch. It has been a short week for them and they had a hard game against the Colts on Sunday, However given the Lions are still struggling with injuries it is hard to see an upset. We will take the Patriots to win this one by 10 points +

New Orleans Saints at Dallas Cowboys – When the schedules were announced many my self included expected this to be a game with major connotations for both sides. However Dallas have had a pretty dismal season and although technically they could still figure in the Wild Card race nothing short of winning out will be good enough. The Saints are in a battle with Atlanta and the seasons surprise package the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC South. The Saints will be well up for this as they need a win to stay in the race. A hard one to call given Dallas are improving under Jason Garrett. Overall we will go with the Saints in a close game. We expect the winning margin to be 3-7 points.

Cincinnati Bengals at NY Jets – The Jets are strong favourites for this one and given the Bengals are failing to fire this year its probably justified. We cant argue with the odds makers here and expect the Jets to cover the 9 point spread with some ease. Its the Jets for us by 14 points.

Anyway whoever you support good luck and have a great Thanksgiving.

Wade Phillips Is History In Dallas

No one will have been surprised that Wade Phillips has been sacked as coach of Dallas following the Cowboys humiliating defeat at Green Bay, the only surprise it that Jerry Jones too so long given they have had such a poo reason. Following this move Jason Garrett will take over as interim coach until the end of the season.

Although Phillips will be best remembered for this awful 1-7 start it shouldn’t be forgotten that he had a 35-23 record with Dallas and won two NFC East titles, and got the Cowboys’ their first playoff victory since 1996. That’s not too bad a record and leaves him at 83-65 overall as a head coach.

Its hard to put a finger on where it went wrong for Dallas this year as they have the talent however this could be the problem too many stars and no team ethos. Still with 8 games still to go they could yet salvage a little pride and although a Wild card looks way out of the question I don’t expect them to be picking first or second  in next years draft.

NFL 2010 Week 6 Results

MINNEAPOLIS - JANUARY 17: Wade Phillps, Head ...

The San Francisco 49ers finally got off the mark on Sunday Night coming from behind to beat The Oakland Raiders. This leaves Carolina & Buffalo as the only teams without a win this season at 0-5.

The Minnesota Vikings won the game of the night sending the Dallas Cowboys to 1-4, which will effectively end Wade Phillips tenure as head coach. With a big game coming against Green Bay the Vikings could find themselves right back in the mix in the NFC North.

The Big AFC clash saw the Patriots edge past Baltimore in OT to confirm that talk of their demise is premature. Given they are rebuilding and have a stack of draft picks next year it will be no surprise if we see New England back in the Superbowl soon.

San Diego continued with their generosity on the road as they lost 17-20 at the Rams to record their 4th consecutive road loss. Their road losses have been by a combined total of 25 points and with a little more composure they could easily have won them all. With The Patriots visiting this week it is possible they could fall to 2-5 which in any division other than the AFC West would spell disaster. However given the West is so poor they will be confident of winning it still even if it is 8-8.

Some strange results overall last week and the gap between the best and the rest in the NFL looks like it is starting to close.
