Peyton Manning Heads For Denver

It now looks increasingly likely that Peyton Manning (who became a free agent on 7th March) will be heading for the Denver Broncos. The ex Colts QB has had discussions with various franchises, however it looks like legendary Broncos QB John Elway (now in charge) has persuaded him that his future is with them.

This move throws up a major question mark against Tim Tebow who guided the team to the playoffs last season and he looks likely to be traded with Adam Weber probably being kept as back up.

This move is bad news for the rest of the AFC West as the Broncos look to have a defense and an offensive line – something the Colts were lacking despite their incredible run of success with Peyton at the helm.

A quick look at Betfair (the UK betting exchange) shows the reaction with the Broncos odds tumbling rapidly from around 100-1 to 18-1 for the Superbowl since the announcement.

It is not a done deal yet but if it comes off and Peyton is fit then the Broncos will be a playoff team at least again in 2012.

Obviously this decision also pretty much signals the destination of Andrew Luck in the forthcoming draft.

John Fox Jumps Out Of Frying Pan Into The Fire.

Ex Carolina Panthers Head Coach John Fox has decided to try his luck with another struggling team, this time Denver, and will hope to reproduce the magic of his early stint at the Panthers. Despite a couple of recent poor seasons John Fox did manage a 73-71 record in 9 seasons at Carolina and took them to the Superbowl where they lost an epic game to New England and has shown in doing so that he can turn a poor team around.

I has inherited a bit of a patchwork Denver team, but with Tim Tebow starting to make a little progress and the no2 draft pick this year he should be able to start the rebuilding process almost right away. The AFC West remains the second weakest division in the NFL so I wont be betting against him making an impression in it in 2011.

Josh McDaniels Fired By Denver Broncos after 3-9 Slump

Josh McDaniels short lived reign at Denver will be best remembered for his off field decisions rather than the teams performance on the field and after Denver slipped to 3-9 against Divisional Rivals Kansas City the inevitable happened. In his 22 months in charge Denver were more like a soap opera than a team with a protracted Jay Cutler saga soon followed by a inexplicable second half slump which saw them end 8-8 after a very promising start. Then the trading of their main offensive weapon Brandon Marshall seemed to indicate that their ambition for 2010 was limited.

To be fair the Broncos have not had much luck with injuries, and apart from the dismal result against Oakland they have at least been fairly competitive in their defeats, but with no rushing offense and a poor rush defense it was obvious that something was wrong with the team building strategy. Given the lack of success at running back the choice of  Eric Studesville  as interim coach for the final month looks a bit strange, however with nothing left to play for but pride this decision will have little impact overall.

Josh McDaniels is only 34 so has plenty of time to put this behind him and he will no doubt resurface as a head coach sometime in the future, but for now he will join Wade Phillips and Brad Childress who also lost their jobs mid season due to failing to meet expectations.

Bronco’s Kenny McKinley Found Dead

Denver Bronco’s wide receiver Kenny McKinley has been found dead in what looks like either suicide or a tragic accident. Kenny McKinley was a fifth-round draft choice out of South Carolina in 2009 and  remains South Carolina’s all-time leading receiver with 207 catches for 2,781 yards. He had 8 starts in 2009 for Denver mainly a kick returner but picked up an injury in December leaving him on injured reserve. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

2010 AFC West Season Predictions

San Diego Chargers logo

The AFC West looks a strange division again this season with it being by far the weakest in the AFC , however the Super Bowl winner could easily come out of it. With what looks like the easiest schedule in the NFL this season it will be one of the biggest upsets of all time if the San Diego Chargers don’t win it, however any of the other three could realistically finish second.

The San Diego Chargers finished 13-3 last season and won their last 11 regular season games including hard fought wins at Dallas and the NY Giants, however once again they choked in the post season losing to the NY Jets 17-14. They have rang the changes big style in the close season offloading 7 veterans including Tweet Happy Antonio Cromante and La Danian Tomlinson, and signing a couple of journeyman corners. This is not a major problem for the Chargers though as they have filled the gaps pretty well in the draft, and have resigned their key free agents. The Vincent Jackson side show will remain a distraction, however with a pretty easy schedule they should go 12-4 at least and take the division with ease and possibly home field advantage.

The Oakland Raiders have been a bit of a shambles since their Super Bowl loss to Tampa back in 2003 and it is not Say to build a case for them in 2010, however someone has to finish second and finally they might just be good enough. The addition of Kyle Boller and probable starter Jason Campbell may finally bring a bit of stability at QB following the Ja Marcus Russell debacle, and they have upgraded their defense with the drafting of Ronaldo McClain & Lamarr Houston. However they still look fragile on offense and cant expect Darren McFadden to win the games for them single handily. Strange though it sounds given its the Raiders we are talking about they have drafted well this year and defensively at least they should be quite solid.

Unfortunately with no offensive line to speak of apart from two promising rookies and with no weapons out wide for Jason Campbell its hard to see how they can make much of a step up. They could challenge Denver for second place and we are just giving them the edge.

The Denver Broncos have started their last two seasons like potential playoff teams, only to fade disastrously in the second half. This has to be due to their wafer thin squad and with more leaving than arrived in free agency it is hard to see how they can improve things. The Defensive line still looks weak to me and adding a couple of decent veterans is not the answer given Williams is now 34 and it is questionable as to how much more punishment he can take. With the D line looking so poor it is strange that they chose to pass up on all the talent available, using two 1st round picks on offense. Both Thomas and Decker should see some action though and with Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler they will get plenty of chances to shine. This could be a disapointing season for Broncos fans and they could easily slump to third.

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be in perpetual rebuilding mode of late, however slowly but surely they are laying the foundations of potential success. They did well in the draft picking up Eric Berry who looks promising and in Dexter McCluster they have a serious threat out wide. Ryan Lilja and Thomas Jones will bring leadership and experience to the team, with both being used to winning which will instill a bit more fire in the team hopefully.

The Chiefs will certainly be able to run the ball with the Jomes Charles combination looking quite exciting and they have a decent QB in Matt Cassells so with a lot of luck they could be a 7-9 team. In this company they could easily finish 2nd or third, but we just feel they will need another nice early draft pick next year before they can move off the bottom.

Overall expected finishing positions

1. San Diego Chargers

2. Oakland raiders

3. Denver Broncos

4. Kansas City Chiefs.
