The Denver Broncos Training Camp Strikes Again

The Broncos 2010 training camp is turning into a dangerous place to be, not content with injuring both their main Running Backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter on day one, now they have also lost their main defensive player Elvis Dumervil.

The 26-year-old who led the league with 17 sacks in 2009 has torn a pectoral muscle and is now doubtful for the whole of the season. This is fast becoming a disaster for the Denver Broncos who now have no bona fide pass-rusher.

Given that All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady, receiver Kenny McKinley (knee) and safety Josh Barrett (shoulder) are all out for the season and Inside linebacker D.J. Williams and safety Brian Dawkins have been missing practice time, things are not looking good.

These injuries effectively end any slim hope that the Broncos might have had of winning the AFC West and they could even slip to 3rd as Oakland are starting to get a team put together.

Thing Get Rough At Broncos Training Camp

The opening day of the Denver Broncos training camp resulted in injuries to main running backs Knowshon Moreno and ex Eagle Correll Buckhalter. Both picked up leg injuries while running the same drill and coach Josh McDaniel might have to consider easing off a little if he wants to avoid more injuries so early in training. Fortunately neither player is thought to have sustained serious damage, however this is a worry as Denver are not over endowed with running backs. With veteran J.J. Arrington already on his way to the Eagles this only leaves Kolby Smith,  who only had 33 yards rushing for Kansas last season and second-year pros Lance Ball and Bruce Hall who have accumulated 1 start between them. It is just about possible that undrafted rookie Toney Baker who was a star at North Carolina State could find himself on the roster if Moreno & Buckhalter are sidelined.

With San Diego still looking likely AFC West Division winners and Oakland having strengthened their defense, going into the new season with a limited running game could be disastrous for the Broncos, who could find a wild Card place beyond them again this season and might even struggle to gain second place.

Brady Quinn Eyes Denver Starter Position

Quarter Back Brady Quinn intends to compete for the starters role at the Denver Broncos following his transfer from the Cleveland Browns. Quinn a 1st round draft pick has failed to shine at Cleveland but to be fair the franchise has struggled during his stay so it is difficult to assess his true potential.

He will have some stiff competition from Kyle Orton who had a steady if unspectacular 1st season in which he threw a career high 21 touch downs to help Denver to an 8-8 record.

Denver Broncos Begin Their Rebuilding Plans

The Denver Broncos have started their rebuilding plans by putting several starters on tender including a first-round tender on wide receiver Brandon Marshall who set an NFL record in 2009 by catching 21 passes for 200 yards including two touchdowns against Indianapolis.

Others on first round tender include linebacker Elvis Dumervil who had a career high 17 sacks, starting quarterback Kyle Orton acquired from Chicago in the Jay Cutler trade and big right guard Chris Kuper.

Dumervil also has a third-round tender attaching making him even more costly to acquire.

For those not familiar with the tender terminology it basically means that any team offering a contract to these players would have to give up a 1st round draft pick (or a 1st and a 3rd in Dumervil’s case). Additionally Denver would still have the right to match any contract offer should they choose.

After 2 consecutive seasons where Denver have started well before snatching failure from the jaws of success this plan of action does not come as a major surprise.
