Chiefs Free Agency Notebook

The official list sits at 25. It’s a number that represents approximately 47% of Kansas City’s 53-man roster. Some of the 25 are starters and one received a Pro Bowl invite.

These 25 players represent members of the Chiefs currently sitting without contracts for 2011.

The total seems high; inflated, actually. A number of these players wouldn’t have sniffed NFL free agency under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and it’s likely that many of them won’t see the open market under a new agreement either.

But for the sake of being accurate, contract questions surround 25 Chiefs due to an unsettled labor situation.

Until a new CBA exists, exclusive rights free agents (ERFAs), restricted free agents (RFAs) and unrestricted free agents (UFAs) don’t technically exist. For now, they’re all the same. They are simply players without contracts for next season.

The current CBA expires on March 4th. If a new deal isn’t in place, free agency won’t begin. If an agreement is reached, what stipulations (if any) will change regarding the franchise tag and/or free agency categorizations for 2011?

A total of 20 Chiefs ended the 2009 season without contracts, but only seven (35%) of those players went on to enter the open market. That’s because a number of Kansas City’s younger players were protected through ERFA or RFA status. Others, like Mike Vrabel, signed an extension prior to the start of free agency.

Similar stipulations will likely decrease Kansas City’s current 25-man total when a new CBA is reached.

In the end, the Chiefs lost just five players through free agency last year – G Andy Alleman, S Mike Brown, TE Sean Ryan, OL Wade Smith and WR Bobby Wade.

While the status of this year’s free agent market remains idle, some things remain the same regardless of ongoing CBA negotiations. One of those is the ability to release players.

Now that the Super Bowl has concluded, teams across the league are now free to start releasing players. Thus far, the action has been relatively quiet. Former Chiefs tackle Jordan Black has been the only player released according to NFL.com. Jacksonville released Black on Monday.

Last year, the Chiefs released five players before the start of free agency. Linebackers Weston Dacus and Justin Rogers were released right away (February 8th), followed by G Mike Goff (February 24th), RB Dantrell Savage (March 3rd) and WR Devard Darling (March 3rd). All five finished the 2009 season on injured reserve.

None of those players appeared on any 53-man roster last season and only one (Savage) even signed with another team. Savage was released by Carolina following training camp.

For now, teams must operate without a crystal ball, but the league has offered some guidance.

The NFL informed each of its 32 teams that they will be able to apply the franchise tags to players later this month. Teams may also make waiver claims and sign free agents off the street.

These are the 25 Chiefs currently without contracts for the 2011 season:

Offensive Players (12)

Quarterbacks (1): Brodie Croyle

Running Backs (3): Jackie Battle, Tim Castille, Mike Cox

Wide Receivers (2): Terrance Copper, Kevin Curtis

Tight Ends (2): Brad Cottam, Leonard Pope

Offensive Linemen (4): Rudy Niswanger, Ryan O’Callaghan, Barry Richardson, Casey Wiegmann

Defensive Players (13)

Defensive Linemen (3): Ron Edwards, Wallace Gilberry, Shaun Smith

Linebackers (5): Charlie Anderson, Cory Greenwood, Tamba Hali, Corey Mays, Mike Vrabel

Cornerbacks (3): Brandon Carr, Travis Daniels, Maurice Leggett

Safeties (2): Reshard Langford, Jon McGraw

*Note: Last offseason, due to the lack of a CBA, players had to wait six years before they hit unrestricted free agency. Under the current CBA (pre-2010 rules), free agency classifications broke down as follows…

Exclusive-Rights Free AgentZero to two years of NFL service. If tendered a contract offer by their old club, ERFAs have no choice but to re-sign and play for that team, or not play football at all.

Restricted Free AgentThree years of NFL service. RFAs are tendered contract offers at one of four different salary levels. Each level corresponds to a draft pick compensation amount for the old club if the player signs with a new team. Players can either re-sign with their old club or sign an offer sheet with a new team. The old club has seven days to match the offer from the new club and retain the player.

Unrestricted Free AgentFour or more years of NFL service. Players are free to sign with another club once the free agent signing period begins. Old clubs receive no compensation if a player signs elsewhere. Old clubs do have the option to place the franchise tag or transition tag on a player before their contract expires in the offseason.

Matt Cassel Operation Blow For Chiefs

Kansas City’s star quarter back Matt Cassel underwent surgery for an appendectomy this week and although there is no official status on his availability it will be a major surprise if he is fit for Sunday Nights big showdown with the San Diego Chargers; a game which could effectively sew up the AFC West.

If as is likely he misses the game this would allow Brodie Croyle a rare chance to improve on his 0-9 record as a started. Given the Chargers will be well up for this one this is probably not his best chance of breaking his duck though.

Ex Patriot Matt Cassel took the AFC offensive player of the month award in November after gaining 1,111 yards and scoring 12  touch downs.

Any Given Monday – KC Upset Chargers

The old NFL adage “any given Sunday” can now be applied to Mondays too as the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off what will probably go down as onbe of the results of the season beating San Diego 21-14.

Everything looked like going according to the script when the Chargers too a 7-0 lead late in the 1st quarter, but then things went wrong. First Jamaal Charles found a gaping hole and promptly ran 56 yards to level the scores and then in the second quarter Matt Cassel threw a 2 yard TD pass and then inside the last 2 minutes Dexter McCluster returned a punt 94 yards to sent the Chiefs in 21-7 at the half.

The Chargers rallied in the second half but the Chiefs somehow held out, and in the pounding rain they produced a heroic goal line stand holding San Diego 4 times in the final minute for a win they didn’t deserve on the stats, but which will not be begrudged due to the heart the team showed.

It will still be a long hard season for the Chiefs who only managed 62 yards passing compared to the Chargers 280 but now they can relax a bit now knowing they have already exceeded most fans expectations.

2010 AFC West Season Predictions

San Diego Chargers logo

The AFC West looks a strange division again this season with it being by far the weakest in the AFC , however the Super Bowl winner could easily come out of it. With what looks like the easiest schedule in the NFL this season it will be one of the biggest upsets of all time if the San Diego Chargers don’t win it, however any of the other three could realistically finish second.

The San Diego Chargers finished 13-3 last season and won their last 11 regular season games including hard fought wins at Dallas and the NY Giants, however once again they choked in the post season losing to the NY Jets 17-14. They have rang the changes big style in the close season offloading 7 veterans including Tweet Happy Antonio Cromante and La Danian Tomlinson, and signing a couple of journeyman corners. This is not a major problem for the Chargers though as they have filled the gaps pretty well in the draft, and have resigned their key free agents. The Vincent Jackson side show will remain a distraction, however with a pretty easy schedule they should go 12-4 at least and take the division with ease and possibly home field advantage.

The Oakland Raiders have been a bit of a shambles since their Super Bowl loss to Tampa back in 2003 and it is not Say to build a case for them in 2010, however someone has to finish second and finally they might just be good enough. The addition of Kyle Boller and probable starter Jason Campbell may finally bring a bit of stability at QB following the Ja Marcus Russell debacle, and they have upgraded their defense with the drafting of Ronaldo McClain & Lamarr Houston. However they still look fragile on offense and cant expect Darren McFadden to win the games for them single handily. Strange though it sounds given its the Raiders we are talking about they have drafted well this year and defensively at least they should be quite solid.

Unfortunately with no offensive line to speak of apart from two promising rookies and with no weapons out wide for Jason Campbell its hard to see how they can make much of a step up. They could challenge Denver for second place and we are just giving them the edge.

The Denver Broncos have started their last two seasons like potential playoff teams, only to fade disastrously in the second half. This has to be due to their wafer thin squad and with more leaving than arrived in free agency it is hard to see how they can improve things. The Defensive line still looks weak to me and adding a couple of decent veterans is not the answer given Williams is now 34 and it is questionable as to how much more punishment he can take. With the D line looking so poor it is strange that they chose to pass up on all the talent available, using two 1st round picks on offense. Both Thomas and Decker should see some action though and with Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler they will get plenty of chances to shine. This could be a disapointing season for Broncos fans and they could easily slump to third.

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be in perpetual rebuilding mode of late, however slowly but surely they are laying the foundations of potential success. They did well in the draft picking up Eric Berry who looks promising and in Dexter McCluster they have a serious threat out wide. Ryan Lilja and Thomas Jones will bring leadership and experience to the team, with both being used to winning which will instill a bit more fire in the team hopefully.

The Chiefs will certainly be able to run the ball with the Jomes Charles combination looking quite exciting and they have a decent QB in Matt Cassells so with a lot of luck they could be a 7-9 team. In this company they could easily finish 2nd or third, but we just feel they will need another nice early draft pick next year before they can move off the bottom.

Overall expected finishing positions

1. San Diego Chargers

2. Oakland raiders

3. Denver Broncos

4. Kansas City Chiefs.

Thomas Jones Joins Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have added Thomas Jones to their running back roster signing him from the New York Jets where he will take some of the work load off of  Jamaal Charles, last seasons MVP.

The Chiefs were due to have a meeting with Willie Parker and had met with The Oakland Raiders Justin Fargas but they obviously think they have their man in Jones.

The Chiefs are slowly but surely moving in the right direction and given the uncertain status of the other teams in the AFC West coupled with an easy schedule who knows where they could finish this season.
