Dolphin Digest: Countdown To Kickoff

GAME FACTS
Date: Monday, Sept. 12
Time: 7 p.m. ET
Site: Sun Life Stadium
TV: ESPN

THE SERIES
Series record: Miami leads 50-41 (including playoffs)
At Miami: Dolphins lead 33-12
At NEW ENGLAND: Patriots lead 28-17
AT TAMPA: Patriots lead 1-0
LAST MEETING: 2011 at New England; Patriots 38, Dolphins 7
SERIES TREND: New England has had the better of things lately, winning six of the last eight meetings, including both last season. Only one of the last 10 meetings was decided by less than 10 points, the Dolphins’ 22-21 victory at Miami in November 2009.
SERIES HIGHLIGHT: Of all the Dolphins-Patriots openers, it’s impossible to top the 1994 game at Miami when Dan Marino’s fifth touchdown pass, his third to Irving Fryar, gave the Dolphins a thrilling 39-35 victory.

SCOUTING REPORT
NEW ENGLAND’S RECORD: 0-0
last game: Lost 18-17 to New York Giants
OVERVIEW: The Patriots added high-profile veterans like Albert Haynesworth, Chad Ochocinco and Shaun Ellis in the offseason as they go looking for their eight AFC East titles in nine years.
THE PATRIOTS’ STRENGTH ON OFFENSE: No great secret here. It’s Brady, Brady, Brady. As long as he continues operating at high efficiency, New England will remain a contender.
THE PATRIOTS’ QUESTION MARK ON OFFENSE: As remarkable as it might seem, the Patriots actually finished higher in the league rankings in 2010 in run offense than they did in pass offense. But that’s a tribute to the respect paid to Brady. The truth is that the Patriots running back corps led by BenJarvus Green-Ellis and featuring rookies Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen is unspectacular at best.
THE PATRIOTS’ STRENGTH ON DEFENSE: What the Patriots did best on defense in 2010 was take the ball away, and cornerback Devin McCourty led the way with seven interceptions. Safety Patrick Chung also is a playmaker in the secondary.
THE PATRIOTS’ QUESTION MARK ON DEFENSE: The Patriots had a hard time getting to the quarterback last year, finishing with only 25 sacks. They hope that newcomers like Andre Carter and Mark Anderson can help make a difference.
THE PATRIOTS’ STRENGTH ON SPECIAL TEAMS: The Pats have a good punt returner in Julian Edelman, but their best weapon in the kicking game is placekicker Stephen Gostkowski. He’s not only accurate on field goals but also has a big leg, and the Dolphins might have a tough time getting a returnable kickoff on Monday night.
THE PATRIOTS’ QUESTION MARK ON SPECIAL TEAMS: Dolphins fans remember too well the name Brandon Tate, who returned the second-half kickoff of last year’s game at Sun Life Stadium for a touchdown. Well, the Dolphins don’t have to worry about him anymore because the Patriots cut him on Saturday. Matthew Slater is Tate’s replacement, but he’s not nearly as explosive a returner.

Dolphins Ready To Get Down To Business For Real; Other Notes

All it takes is one look at the clocks on the wall inside the locker room to remind the Miami Dolphins that play time is over and it’s time to get down to business.

The bright red digits displayed just five days remaining until Miami opens the 2011 regular season against the New England Patriots at Sun Life Stadium. So it was easy to understand why today’s practice had a different and more intense feel to it, and the players are anxious to face the “live bullets” as outside linebacker Cameron Wake described the Patriots.

“This is the real deal and there’s an expression we say around here, ‘It just got real.’ We walked in this locker room and we crossed that line and it’s real bullets,” Wake said. “It’s no more first team take a break and play half a game with camp bodies, none of that. This is the Miami Dolphins’ 53 and we’re going out there and it counts.”

Add in the fact the Dolphins are facing an opponent within the AFC East division and their adrenaline was raised even more. That is why the competitive fires at practice burned brighter, much to Head Coach Tony Sparano’s pleasure.

“It was a lot better today than it was Sunday or Monday,” Sparano said. “Sunday or Monday you don’t kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel yet. It becomes a long week and I’ve cautioned my team against allowing the week to get too long, so we wanted to break the monotony with a day off here yesterday and a couple of days worth of work before that. … We were able to get at it today and the enthusiasm was real good.”

In addition to the rookies on both sides of the ball actively awaiting their chance to play a meaningful NFL game for the first time, some of Miami’s long tenured veterans are equally as excited. Those experienced guys can be found more easily on defense right now.

Veteran strong safety Yeremiah Bell holds the distinction of being the oldest current Dolphin in terms of consecutive seasons with this being his eighth. His eyes still lit up at the sight of that clock ticking down closer to game day.

“You get to the start of camp and that’s exciting, but as you get going through camp you’re just worried about that first game,” said Bell, who is looking for his fourth straight season of 100 or more tackles. “So now that we’re finally here I think guys are ready, guys are very excited about it and we’re ready to go out and show what we can do.”

Sparano cracked a smile during his press conference when he was asked what the pros and cons were to opening the season on Monday night instead of Sunday. The 136-day lockout certainly impacted his answer.

“In a lockout year there’s tremendous pros,” he said with a laugh. “My buddy in New Orleans (Sean Payton) opens up on Thursday and we all started training camp at the same time. We gained an extra day here and we were able to handle the Thursday game a little differently knowing we had an extra day down the road.”

Of course that means the team can expect even more intense practices tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, with the end result in their eyes being a stellar performance under the lights on Monday.

INJURY UPDATE: Rookie fullback Charles Clay was the only player not to practice this afternoon as he worked on the side with the trainers. … Sparano also revealed that free safety Chris Clemons, who did not practice Sunday and Monday, has been limited.

NO WORRIES ABOUT LONG’S READINESS: Sparano managed to make it through the entire preseason without inserting Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long at all, not even for one series. Long began camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list until the day after the second preseason game against Carolina and apparently showed enough in practice to allow Sparano to be comfortable not seeing him in live action at all.

“The guy’s played about 5,000 plays in three years so if you play 5,000 plays in three years I’m pretty confident I know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I’m pretty confident that I know what it’s going to take him to get ready to play. Going into today he had close to 200 snaps so by the time we play the game he’ll probably have 350 plays, which to be quite honest with you is a couple hundred away from where the rest of the guys are.”

Of course when he does line up with the starting offense, new running back Reggie Bush will be looking for him whenever he carries the ball in that direction.

“He’s a freak. He’s big and I know anytime I get the ball to the left hand side I’m running behind Jake,” Bush said. “I can’t wait because I know he’s a monster out there and the name speaks for itself. You see him and you right away think I’d like to run behind that guy.”

Dolphin Digest: Targeting Takeaways Key To Topping Pats

The members of the Dolphins defense have big plans for the 2011 season, and the biggest thing they can do to take the next step this season is come up with more takeaways.

Monday night would be a great time to start because forcing a few turnovers would go a long way toward helping the Dolphins score a big opening-night victory over the New England Patriots.

Going by what happened in the 2010 season, that will be one difficult task, one equal to the challenge of trying to slow down Tom Brady and company.

The Patriots simply didn’t turn the ball over last season, setting an NFL record for fewest turnovers in a 16-game season with only 10. Ironically, one of the teams that shared the previous record of 13 was the Dolphins, who accomplished the feat in 2008.

The Dolphins, for their part, set a franchise record for fewest takeaways with 19.

It was the one glaring negative mark for a defense that finished sixth in the league in total yards allowed, seventh against the run and eighth against the pass.

The Dolphins were one of only five teams — the Chargers, Jets, Giants and Vikings were the others — to finish in the top 10 in all three categories.

In their two meetings against the Patriots, the Dolphins were able to force only one turnover, a Danny Woodhead fumble in the season finale at Gillette Stadium.

On the flip side, the Dolphins turned the ball over six times in the two meetings, four times in Miami and twice in New England.

It was par for the course for the Pats in 2010. They led the league with a tremendous plus-28 turnover ratio (38 takeaways, 10 giveaways). The Dolphins, meanwhile, were 30th in the NFL at minus-12 (19 takeaways, 31 giveaways).

All the elements are in place for the Dolphins to improve on their takeaway total.

All but one 2010 starter return on defense, and the one change likely will help in the takeaway department based on recent history.

Kevin Burnett takes over at inside linebacker for Channing Crowder after coming up with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for San Diego last season. Crowder, for his part, had one pick, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his SIX seasons as a starter.

Of course, for the Dolphins to improve on their takeaway total, they’ll have to do a better job of hanging on to interceptions. The Dolphins spent a lot of time in training camp working on ball drills, but it still comes down to making the plays in regular season games.

Brady won’t be easy to pick off, though. He’s coming off a season when he had only four interceptions compared to 36 touchdowns — no wonder he was named league MVP.

But the Dolphins defenders have plenty of confidence in what they can do in their second year under coordinator Mike Nolan. The time has come to show it.

“It was fun last year,” said linebacker Karlos Dansby. “We’ll just try to better ourselves. We finished sixth last year as a total defense and that’s strong. But we can do better. We had opportunities to, but we just didn’t finish. If we can finish strong, we can win a lot of ballgames.

“All the way around, from the D-line to the linebackers to the secondary, we’ve all got to take it personally as a vendetta and personal goals to try to get better. If we do that, we’ll come together and we’ll have an excellent defense.”
