Blaine Gabbert Somewhat Eclipsed By Ryan Mallett

In what was admittedly only an exhibition game the Patriots 3rd round draft pick QB Ryan Mallett somewhat outshone the highly regarded Blaine Gabbert throwing a TD pass and throwing for 164 yards. Twelve completions from Nineteen also left him with an impressive debut QB rating of 108.2. He was also involved in 3 other TD scoring drives as New England piled up the points in a 47-12 win.

Gabbert who played the 1st half to be fair faced a few of the expected New England starters and he avoided turning the ball over. Finishing with 9 completions for 85 yards was not too bad considering it was his first outing and he will learn from this experience. He should get another chance although it wont be any easier when the Jags take on the Falcons on 19th August.

New England Add More Pass Rush With Shaun Ellis Signing

The New England Patriots who have already been busy in the Free Agancy Market, added more firepower to their D Line with the aquisition of ex New York Jets Defensive End Shaun Ellis.

Their pass rush had already bgeen considerably upgraded with the addition of the talented if slightly controversial Albert Haynesworth and this combination will be enough to make many quarterbacks a little uneasy to say the least going into 2011.

Although a veteran at 34, Ellis who is on a One year deal still have a season ortwo left in him, and at 6-foot-5, and 290 pounds he wil add size and menace to the line end as well as being handy against running plays.

With a stack of young players in reserve this looks like a short term solution and emphasises the Patriots intention to end their recent Superbowl drought. It will be no surprise to see him play against his old colleagues in the post season, injury allowing and right now the Patriots look like being the team to beat in the AFC this season.

New England Patriots Sign Nate Solder

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Nate Solder’s brief holdout is over. The first-round draft pick signed with New England and joined the Patriots at practice on Thursday.

“It’s good to have all the draft choices signed,” coach Bill Belichick said. “We’re really looking forward to getting as many people out there on the field as we can.”

Although the Patriots re-signed veteran Matt Light this week to continue protecting quarterback Tom Brady’s blind side, they see Solder as their future at left tackle.

“He’s big. He can run. He’s a good pass blocker. He’s a good run blocker, plays on his feet. He’s long,” Belichick said before Thursday’s practice.

Solder is a 6-foot-8, 319-pound converted tight end. He moved one spot inside on the offensive line early in his career and ended it as a first-team All-American lineman last year at Colorado. He was also a finalist for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s best interior lineman.

New England selected Solder with the 17th pick in the draft. The urgency to get him to practice was lessened earlier this week when New England re-signed Light, who is entering his 11th season with the Patriots.

The Patriots could put Solder on the other side of the line and get him playing right away, but Belichick said the plan is still to keep Solder on the left side behind Light.

“That’s what he played. And he played it well. That’s why we drafted him. But can he play right tackle? I think he has the skill set to, but we’ll see,” Belichick said. “Eventually, everybody is going to have to block big guys, fast guys, quick guys, games, blitzes. Everybody will get tested sooner or later.”
