Wes Welker On Track For Season Opener

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker ...

The New England Patriots will be heartened by the news that Wes Welker, who sufferd a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his left knee at the end of last season, looks like being fit for the season opener and is expected to be taking part in the pre season training soon.

Welker, went under the knife  in February to repair the ligament damage he suffered in the last game of the 2009 regular season during which he set a career highs with 123 catches for 1,348 yards. He was a big miss in the post season and having him back sooner than expected will be a major boost to the Partiots chances of making the post season again, which they will need given that the AFC East looks like being ultra competitive this season.

Wes Welker Boost For The Patriots

The New England Patriots will be heartened by the news that Wide Receiver Wes Welker looks to be on the mend and should play some part in the 2010 season. Welker who played in 14 games in 2009 was their leading receiver and he was a big miss going into the post season which ended in disappointment for the Patriots as they lost to Baltimore.

Given the New York Jets look like being a major threat in the AFC East this year this is good news for them as they look to recapture the form that saw them dominate the early part of the decade. The retaining of Nose Tackle Vince Wilfork and defensive end Derrick Burgess shows they will not give up their position without a fight in 2010 and given they have drafterd well the battle for supremacy in the division should be most enthralling this season.

New England Keen to Extend Tom Brady’s Contract

Tom Brady

The New England Patriots have indicated they are keen to sign star Quarter Back Tom Brady to a long term contract to prevent him form becoming a free agent after the 2010 season. At age 32 Brady still has several seasons ahead of him and I am not sure that they would risk going with either Brian Hoyer or Jeff Rowe at this stage, especially given the fragile nature of the current offensive line.  I would expect New England to offer a 3 year contract extension and despite having a lot of draft picks again this year I would be surprised if they pick a QB given that Hoyer could progress into a starter, although if Tim Tebow is still floating around in the second or third round they may be tempted.

Vince Wilfork To Leave The Patriots?

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - AUGUST 28: Wide receive...

Big Defensive Tackle Vince Wilfork has come to the end of his initial 6 year deal with the New England Patriots and now they will have to stump up some big bucks to prevent him from pulling on a different jersey in the 2010-11 season.

The Patriots have a habit of not paying the big money but for their fans losing Wilfork would be a concern especially given he led the league in tackles from his position and from what I saw of them this year the defense looked a lot less menacing than in previous years. Losing such a key player could in my opinion threaten New England’s position as team to beat in the improving AFC East where Miami and the NY Jets are fast improving.

The Patriots do have the option of slapping the Franchise tag on him, but that will not please a player of Wilfork’s calibre and would only be a stop gap measure as he would still be free to walk after one more season.

My advice to the Patriots would be, make the call and give him a 3 year deal which should be enough time for the younger players they have coming through to mature and learn from his experience and leadership.
