Hard-Hitting Harper Back On Field

New Orleans Saints S Roman Harper and WR Lance Moore returned to the field for the first time since agreeing to terms with the Saints last Friday. Following the two and a half hour workout, two of the longest tenured people with the team met with the media after and talked about their first day back on the field. Enclosed are the transcripts of the conversations:

S Roman Harper

Tell me about the up-downs with Gregg Williams.

“That’s how you have to do it to play with Gregg.  You have to do 40 up-downs to get in and anybody that we bring in during the season has to do it too.  We knew it was coming.  It comes with the whole condition test and it’s part of being a part of our defense.  It makes it fun and we definitely enjoy it.”

Was there a sense of real competition beginning today?

“Yes.  The coaches took it that way and we did too.  Before that it was more like getting involved, letting a lot of younger guys and everybody try and get their feet wet a little bit.  But today, you can definitely tell that the pace has picked up, everybody was playing a little faster, the pads were on and a little more popping.  It felt good and I think we look pretty good today for our first day in pads. Overall I was pretty pleased with today.”

Were you nervous that you weren’t going to be able to get on the field today?

“I wasn’t really nervous.  It just was what it was.  If I wasn’t going to be able to go today it was going to be like a normal day for me, sit on the sidelines, watch, and coach a little bit, but once they said around three-thirty, four o’clock we were good to go, I was ready to go.  I had to go get strapped up and get mentally ready.  I started off a little slow but overall, at the end of the day, I felt really good.”

Did you feel a little behind today?

“Definitely the rhythm wasn’t immediately back.  I continued to work on my eyes a little bit when I’m driving out of the route.  Drew (Brees) threw one out to tight end Jimmy Graham on me today, so I need to continue to work on that.  I was in good position, I just need to continue to drive the route.  Little things like that will come with time, I was just a little bit rusty, but it was a good first day for myself and also as a defense.  I think we played really fast defensively, especially that first group.  We looked pretty good out there.  I like the way we are right now.  We have some young guys that can play too so they can definitely help us out.  I’m looking forward to getting out there and competing against someone else.”

The defense looked pretty mad that you didn’t win the practice today.

“Our offense is good.  They have a lot of different weapons and they definitely made some good plays today.  Drew (Brees) made a few plays on our zero coverage and they caught a couple passes down field.  The other stuff we have to get correcting and we are going to do that but overall, defensively, we look pretty good for the first day.”

It’s not just fun out there, it’s immediately competing right?

“It’s immediately competing.  Yes there is no better team, offensively, to compete against than our own.  They do more than any other team we will face all year and we have one of the best, if not the best quarterback in the league.  Anytime you have a guy like Drew (Brees) out there, going against you, it’s going to make you a lot better.”

WR Lance Moore

Can you talk about getting out there and finally working up a sweat

“It feels good.  Just to have to sit for six or seven days, and watch, being so anxious to get out there, and finally getting out there felt great.  It’s great to be back with the guys.”

How much is it now about getting up to speed, getting the reps, and getting the rhythm with your quarterback?

“It’s going to be the same case for everyone.  All the free agents that signed after the CBA and everything, everyone is going to have to catch up on reps.  There is going to be plenty of time for that.  We haven’t even had our first preseason game yet.  I think we just completed our first week of camp so we are a little bit behind, but we will catch up.”

Can you talk about how you feel about finally getting rewarded with a long-term contract?

“It’s a long time coming.  I’ve been here for the past six years and to finally ink that long-term deal, that’s something you work hard for your whole career.  To now finally have it, it’s a great thing, but I’m not done yet.  I still feel like I have a lot of ball left in me, and a lot of plays left to make.  You shouldn’t see anything different out of me.”

Does that mean to you that you have made it?

“You could say that, but to me I feel like haven’t made it.  I still have to make plays, I still have to prove myself each and every day and prove that I’m worth the money that I’m receiving.”

Does that make the expectations a little higher?

“That’s fine.  I don’t mind expectations going up.  I feel like I can play better always so I’m going to keep working like that.”

How important is the cohesiveness with the offense?

“It’s been a number of years, but where we have been is not necessarily where we want to go again.  We want to be better than that.  We feel like the sky is the limit with this group.  We have a nice little bit of continuity having the same guys back again and we are excited about it.”

Saints Announce Roster Moves

The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent CB Trumaine McBride. The team also announced that the following rookies were waived: TE Harry Flaherty, T Mike Smith, T Coy Beilby, QB Ryan Colburn and RB C.J. Gable. The team also waived veteran RB Lynell Hamilton. The announcements were made by Saints’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

McBride, 26, is a native of Clarksdale, Mississippi and a product of the University of Mississippi. He originally entered the NFL in 2007 as a seventh round draft selection of the Chicago Bears, for whom he played with through the 2009 season. He then signed with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played the 2010 season. He is a veteran of 47 NFL games (10 starts) and has recorded 58 tackles, eight passes defensed and one interception.

Flaherty, Smith, Beilby and Gable and Colburn previously agreed to terms with the Saints as undrafted rookie free agents on July 27, 2011.

Said Head Coach Sean Payton on the release of veteran running back Hamilton: “This was one of the most difficult decisions we’ve had to make since I’ve been the head coach here (2006). It was difficult and I have great admiration for what Lynell has done and how hard he’s worked since he’s been here.”

NFL Officials Showcase New Rules

Referee Clete Blakeman led a presentation today to present the new NFL rule changes to the New Orleans media. Blakeman first showed a video and then took questions with Umpire Garth DeFelice and Back Judge Terrance Miles. The officials will present the same information to the team tomorrow.

The video contained a detailed explanation and video demonstrations of the new rules. The new rules are:
*Surface of entire Field of Play must be a League-approved shade of green.
*Extension of half after a “5 vs. 15” penalty enforcement that includes a dead ball foul on the defense has been eliminated.
*On kickoffs, the kicking team restraining line has been moved to the 35-yard line and no kicking team player (except the kicker) can be lined up more than five yards behind its restraining line after the ball has been made ready for play.
*For a kickoff out of bounds, the receiving team may elect to take the ball 25 yards from the spot of the kick.
*Prohibits illegal “launching” into a defenseless opponent.
*Incorporates all rules regarding “defenseless players” into new article and standardizes their protection. Extends the protection for a receiver who had completed a catch so that he is a “defenseless player” until he has had time to protect himself or has clearly become a runner.
*Hits to the head of a passer by an opponent’s hands, arms, or other parts of the body will not be fouls unless they are forcible blows.
*Replay Official will initiate review of all scoring plays throughout the game. The Replay Official cannot initiate a review for a team, and a team is prevented from challenging a play, if that team commits a foul that prevents the next snap.

The video continued to announce points of emphasis, mainly centered on player safety. The focus will be placed on Illegal low blocks (Chop blocks and Clips), horse collar tackles, grabbing the facemask of a defensive player, and hitting defenseless players. Carl Johnson, VP of Officiating, stated in the video that all players and coaches will be held responsible for violations.

The group of officials will join the team for practice tonight and for the next two days. The goals of this visit is to give a presentation on the new rules and provide clarification on the old. The officials will also split into position groups to explain rules applicable to each position in extended depth.

Blakeman said that it is “nice to see snaps again” while citing the importance of the NFL pre-season to officials. He went on to say, “as important as it is for the players, it (preseason) is even more important to us.” The group stressed the importance of both watching live football before they enter the regular season and getting used to their crew. The trip will provide valuable explanation to the team while giving the officials the opportunity to see live snaps before the kickoff of the 2011 NFL season.

Saints Participate in City of New Orleans’ JOB 1 Youth Summer Program

The New Orleans Saints partnered with the City of New Orleans’ JOB 1 youth summer program to provide New Orleans students with a unique opportunity to learn professional work experience.

Students, ages, 13-22, were eligible to apply for the program and more than 3,000 submitted applications. 12 students were assigned to the Saints facility in Metairie.

Participants gained on-the-job training in a number of departments at the team’s facility, specifically with the Ticket Office, Youth Programs and Marketing departments.

“We have been eager to embrace the JOB 1 program because the initiative encompasses one of the core values of our organization:  youth development,” said Saints’ Owner/Executive Vice President Rita Benson LeBlanc.

“The opportunity that has been afforded to the young men and women that have worked throughout the program this summer has allowed them to see the importance of staying in school, completing their education and above else, setting and pursuing their career goals. They are discovering the principles and importance of dependability, industriousness and commitment.”

In the Ticket Office, the students worked on large-scale paperwork scanning projects to digitize and organize hundreds of season ticket account forms.

The program’s participants also served as coaches during the Saints’ United Way’s Community Patrol camps at the team’s facility. They organized football drills and provided life skills advice for the campers.

The marketing department utilized the students to help promote and organize their numerous events on-and-off site.

“Our best tool in improving our economy and reducing crime is by investing in activities for our youth,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “When we began completely revamping the summer jobs program for our teens, we asked for responsible corporate sponsors to partner with us.

Tess Williams, a senior at Dillard University, said taking part in the JOB 1 program has been a great learning experience. The 22-year old New Orleans native said the on-the-job training was very beneficial, but what she most enjoyed was giving back to the community.

“It’s been exciting to be a part of this program,” said Williams. “To learn the ins and outs of a professional team all while helping impact the lives of kids has been great.”

The program’s participants have helped the facilities, equipment and marketing staffs prepare for the hundreds of people that take part in the team’s training camp that opened for practice Friday, July 29.

“Naturally, the New Orleans Saints answered our call and have provided a dozen New Orleans teens with an unforgettable summer job,” said Landrieu. “This type of public-private partnership helps to cultivate a more career-ready workforce and gives our youth an opportunity to grow in a professional environment. I would like to thank the Saints and the Benson family for taking part in this vital program.”
