Rex’s Friday News Conference

Transcript of head coach Rex Ryan’s news conference following Friday’s midday practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center:

All right, here is our injury deal. Guys that will be out for sure will be Logan Payne, with the wrist, [Isaiah] Trufant, with the hamstring. Those are the only two that will definitely be out. Both of them never practiced, obviously.

Guys that are questionable: Nick Mangold. He was limited today in practice. I expect him to go, that [injury] is the ankle. [Mike] DeVito did not practice today with that knee. I would say he’s questionable and it could be game-time on him whether he goes or not. He kind of got caught up in a pile. He was at practice. We took him in, he came back out to practice yesterday, but today he was sore. That’s why he never practiced. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m thinking it could be a game-time decision there.

Guys that are probable — every one of these guys practiced full today — [Marquice] Cole, with a hamstring, [Antonio] Cromartie, groin, Marcus Dixon, knee, Joe McKnight, knee, Ropati [Pitoitua], knee, Tanner Purdum, back, Donald Strickland, concussion, LaDainian [Tomlinson], not injury-related, Muhammad Wilkerson, shoulder. There is where we are with the injuries.

On the nature of Mike DeVito’s knee injury…

No, it’s not a surgery-type thing, but he kind of got rolled. I don’t know exactly what it is, but we had him checked out. He checked out fine. It’s just that he’s awful sore right now.

On if he had an MRI…

Yes.

On if they found any structural damage…

No.

On how counterproductive it can be to make it a focus of getting Plaxico Burress the ball…

It can be very detrimental to the player, but I don’t think it’s here. We want to get the ball to him and all of our guys, but sometimes, as you talk about, “Just throw it to the open guy.” That’s what we’re all about. We’re not going to force it. We tried to force it when we were up several scores before, but that’s not what we’re all about. We’re just going to hit the open guy.

On Aaron Maybin’s performance…

The thing that I always look at is a stat, that if you go back and look at it, it’s an interesting stat, but forced fumbles. You have to play fast to force a fumble, in my opinion. Right now, the young man leads the league in forced fumbles. He has three forced fumbles. How many snaps has he played? You guys know the answer. I know you do.

That just shows how he plays. He is a passionate guy and his motor is running. He made a great play a couple of weeks ago. He was on the ground, gets up, goes back and forces a fumble about 15 yards down the field. He’s playing with a relentless motor and he’s playing fast. Sometimes it just clicks. It takes a little time with a guy and then, for whatever reason, it clicks for him.

On how important Maybin and Jamaal Westerman will be to run defense…

I think, when we look at Aaron, his thing is more rushing the passer. Obviously, if they run the football, then he has to retrace and he has to do different things, but he’s primarily a pass rush guy, a pass rush specialist for us. Jamaal’s role has to increase. He steps up into more of a base defense role, as well. Obviously, that’s very crucial for us. Josh [Mauga] — I can’t pronounce his last name because he changed it. Since he’s playing more, he’s able to change the name like Chad Ochocinco or something. He’s going to step up in that role as well.

On having multiple players rotate in at a position…

I always like having the more guys that play for you, the better. That’s why I love getting role guys because what happens is it’s good for team morale, it’s good for everything. Your practice is better because everyone knows their plan. That’s kind of what you like to do. It’s almost like a platoon situation in the outfield, a guy against a lefty and a guy against a righty and all that. Sometimes, that works well for your team.

On the pass rush this season…

We were eighth in the league or something last year, and of course, we get killed for lack of sacks. Sure, we’d like to have some, but I was with the 2000 Ravens defense and we had 35 regular-season sacks. That’s one of the best defenses in the history of the game, but the ball was coming out so quick that people weren’t holding the football. You never had a chance to get sacks.

Sometimes, there are different ways of looking at them. We don’t want to be a team that just rushes the passer because what happens is you can’t play run defense. Right now, when you look at that, it looks like we’re one of those teams, but we’re actually not. We want to stop both run and pass, so we’re not just those wide guys that all they care about doing is getting to the Pro Bowl. We want to win and I think you still win by stopping the run, and I think that’s an area where we have to improve.

I do like the fact that I think we are rushing the passer a little better than we’ve done, especially last year, but that’s one thing I’d like to see continue. The fact that we’re forcing turnovers is good. We tighten down the run defense a little bit, I think we’ll be just fine.

On if pass rushing is an innate ability or if it can be taught…

Maybe it is. Rushing the passer is sometimes an instinctive thing. You have to get off the football. You have to have loose hips. You have to have a lot of different things, but if you don’t get off the football, you can’t get there. That’s, generally, what happens. I always think it’s a team deal because if you can’t cover in the back, then you’re not going to get sacks either. It’s a sign of good team defense, but also individual accomplishments, as well.

On if he had to speak to Shonn Greene regarding his confidence…

Not with Shonn, no. Shonn’s just like, “Give me the football, I’ll be just fine.” He’s one of those kind of guys. He doesn’t care who he’s up against. Like all the great backs, he just wants the ball.

On how much he has learned from LaDainian Tomlinson

Probably a ton. I think you’d have to ask him that, but we’ve all taken thing from LT [LaDainian Tomlinson], just that competitiveness, that fire. And then here’s a guy that’s done it year after year after year, game after game, and he’s so consistent. His passion—it’s been great for me to see.

On who would fill in for DeVito if he cannot play…

We’ll probably start the big guy, Kenrick [Ellis], in his place.

On Fireman Ed not being as involved last week…

I’m concerned with Fireman Ed a little bit [joking]. I have no idea. We’re going to have to definitely discuss that with him, and that’s usually been one of our consistent guys, there’s no doubt.

On if he would describe Antonio Cromartie’s play as “up and down”…

I will say this: He studies so well. He’s the first guy in the building and the last to leave almost. You’ve got the quarterback, but I’m telling you, he spends an unbelievable amount of time preparing. I think sometimes he might be pressing a little bit. And maybe there has been some level of up and down or whatever, but I know one thing. I’m happy that he’s on our team. Here’s a guy with man cover skills — that’s hard to find. He’s got such rare God-given ability and talent, sometimes you think that, “Well, we’ll just lock him down,” or whatever, and he can definitely do that, there is no question.

He can play in zone coverage, man coverage, you name it. The range, and all that stuff that he has, but it’s probably fair to say that maybe even to his standards that, “I could’ve played this game a little better,” or whatever. I know one thing. It’s not by lack of effort or anything else. Sometimes we’ve got to remind, “Hey, just rely on your technique and preparation,” because he prepares as good as anybody. Sometimes, I think he gets kind of hyped up a little bit and sometimes at that spot you just need to relax, because he knows how to do it. The guy—like I said, we are very fortunate that he’s on our team. Despite what the Miami guys think, I’ll take our two corners over anybody’s in the league.

On if he is worried about Cromartie being too hyped with the Chargers coming into town…

Maybe a little bit. You’ve got to just, OK, slow your role a little bit this game, because I think you do get excited. There’s no question you get excited about playing your old team and things like that. There’s no doubt.

On why Ellis would start over Ropati Pitoitua or Marcus Dixon…

I think those guys are going to play a ton of roles for us, but I like them in the run game, to have the two big nose tackle types if Mike DeVito can’t play, I like having Bo [Sione Pouha] and Kenrick in there to stack that run up.

On what he has done this week to help the offense start faster this game…

That’s a great question. We’ve had some meetings. I’ve had some meetings, not that I’ve got all the answers, but I can listen. I’ve had Mark [Sanchez] in with me, I’ve had different combinations in there. I’ve leaned on Bob Sutton, leaned on Bill Callahan, Westy [Mike Westhoff], and gotten some of their input, and we’ll see what happens. So if we don’t start fast, I’m going to blame Westhoff. I mean, I think that’s pretty much it this time.

Samantha’s a Performer from Way Back

For some, being on stage is a terrifying thought. For others, it’s a dream. For third-year Flight Crew member Samantha, the stage of MetLife Stadium is as exhilarating as it gets.

“Performing in front of 80,000 people — when will you ever get to do that again?” she said. “This is the biggest stage I’ll ever be on in my life.”

Samantha began dancing at age 2 in her hometown on Staten Island. She has a goal to parlay her experiences with the Flight Crew into a musical theater career.

“I’ve always loved Broadway,” she said. “Even when I was little, I loved the fact that you can become a character.”

At 21, Samantha already has already been dancing for 19 years. Although she has no professional acting experience, she has certainly been in front of a camera before.

“When I was younger, my dad was with me 24/7 and always had the video camera on me, taping everything I did. He would always say, ‘Talk to your fans.’ I was about 6 years old, hamming it up for the camera. It was great.”

Samantha’s love for performance has never wavered. She took dance and vocal courses all throughout her days at Moore Catholic High School, a performance arts school on Staten Island.

“When kids were taking gym or computer class, I was in dance class the whole time. I even took singing,” she said. “I was a dance major and vocal minor in high school.”

After graduation she knew she wanted to pursue a career in the performing arts, so she made the decision to skip college and went all-in.

“My mom really pushed me. She said, ‘If you’re not going to go to college, you have to take dance class and you have to audition.’ ” Samantha recalled. “She saw an advertisement for an audition for the Flight Crew and told me to try it. As soon as I went, I knew I really wanted it.”

Three years later, Samantha is still a member of the Flight Crew, joining her teammates for each Jets home game at MetLife Stadium. Had it not been for the support of her parents, she might have taken a different path completely and would have missed out on the important lessons she has learned.

“Being on the Flight Crew, it definitely has made me more mature as a young woman,” she said. “It has given me the courage to go out there and perform in front of so many people.”

It’s a far cry from playing to her father’s videocam at home, but the rush is essentially the same. The audience is significantly larger, which adds to the thrill of performing.

“Every game, just stepping out onto the field for pregame, looking up and seeing all the fans, taking in the moment, seeing everybody watching you, you feel so proud at that moment. You feel like you’re a part of this team,” she said. “Even if I do go on Broadway, there aren’t going to be that many people.”

With so much experience already under her belt, Samantha will continue to push hard toward her ambitions. For now, she is more than happy to be with the Flight Crew.

I’m having so much fun. It’s the best job in the entire world.”

New York Jets : News

Rex’s Thursday News Conference

Transcript of head coach Rex Ryan’s news conference following Thursday’s midday practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center:

Out [today], Logan Payne. Did not practice: Nick Mangold, ankle, Isaiah Trufant, hamstring. Guys that were limited today: [Antonio] Cromartie with his groin, [Mike] DeVito, knee, Ropati [Pitoitua], knee. Then all the other guys were full, which was Marquice Cole, hamstring, Marcus Dixon, knee, Joe McKnight, knee, Tanner Purdum, low back, [Donald] Strickland, concussion, LaDainian [Tomlinson] and then Muhammad Wilkerson.

Apparently, we never asked the right question in here yesterday, but I guess something happened. [smiling] Just another reason to question our media policy [smiling]. I’m kidding. It’s me. Here we go. It’s all on me. I’m guilty, absolutely. It was unintentional. I did call Norv [Turner]. I won’t get into that conversation, but it was unintentional. I think we’re even because he did get me with a good shot, there’s no question, so I think we’re even. I do think I’ll be able to get my relationship back with Norv. I think we’ll be OK. The one I do worry about is [Mike] Tannenbaum, obviously, because he won’t speak to me or anything else now. [joking] With that, maybe some of you guys will speak to me. I’ll open it up for questions.

On if he expects any situation to occur like the one last weekend with Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz…

Well, I did ask Norv if I need to wear a helmet for the game [laughter]. He assured me I never did.

On if he likes the controversies that always seem to be around him…

I appreciate you bringing that up [smiling]. Obviously, I wish this one never happened. It was just clearly unintentional. I don’t know what other word to use. When the question came to me, I don’t know what to even say. I was praising the heck out of them because I think they’ve got a great organization. I talked about [San Diego general manager] A.J. Smith, he really did, I thought, put me on the map. I don’t think I was being considered a head coach until A.J. brought me in. It led to me getting three interviews the next year and landing this job. I really thank him for doing that, thinking enough of me that he would consider me a head coach. I really did mean those things, sincerely. The other things, it just happens.

On how soon he realized his comments might be taken the wrong way…

I realized right when I said it. I was just answering a question, not even necessarily thinking about really my response. Then I was like, “Oh, man, I’d better call Norv.” I’m sure he knows it’s unintentional, but I wanted to make sure he heard it from me.

On if he was surprised that Coach Turner said something regarding his comment after the phone call…

No, not at all. It was a good one. [joking] There’s no doubt.

On if he talked to his players about his comments because some people saw it as a remark against his own team…

You know, I’m not confident with this team at all [joking]. I wouldn’t trade this team for anybody’s. I’ve said that forever. That’s why I said the joking thing about Tannenbaum, because that’s the most ridiculous thing. That’s more ridiculous than my comment.

On if he understands how his comment could have been taken the way it was by Norv Turner…

I could. I think that’s why I wanted to make sure I called and he heard it from me. Really, if you read all the other comments I had in there, I did talk about how much I respect that organization and respect Norv and what they’ve accomplished. This is a team that year-in [and] year-out are in the playoffs. That’s why I think we get away from this game, which is two teams that are in the playoffs year-in [and] year-out, and obviously, every year is different. We’re fighting like crazy. They’re fighting like crazy. It should be a heck of a game. I think that’s the biggest thing. It was unintentional and I hope it doesn’t take away from this game.

On if he thinks the Jets defense is still an elite defense…

I don’t think there is any doubt. I think we’re an elite defense. We’re number one on third-down defense in the league. I think we’re even up there in sacks this year. See, I told you. [joking] Something has to give. We got you more sacks. But seriously, without question, we’re an elite defense. There is no doubt about that. I think we’re 11th in total defense, but we’re turning the ball over on defense, which is great. We’re scoring when we get them, which is good. Then we’re playing great on third down.

Obviously, we’d like our scoring defense to be better. The run defense is the one that doesn’t fit our profile, but we’ll be tested this week, too. This is a team that can really run the football, one of the best offenses in the league.

On if he thinks a strong defensive performance against San Diego would help re-establish the defense…

I just want to win. All [I] say [is], [if] we win 50 to 49, I’d be happy. As far as everybody knows, I’d be extremely happy with that. [joking] The numbers, we’ll let them shake out throughout the season. I have a pretty good idea where we’ll end up.

On San Diego possibly having the emotional edge because they lost to the Jets in the playoffs two years ago…

I think that’s the biggest thing going into it. Of course, this team, we were able to beat them in the playoffs when they had a great regular season, so there’s probably going to be a little more added thing there. I like the fact we’re playing at home in front of our crowd. I think that’s going to give us a big edge.

On if Tomlinson playing against his old team will impact his playing time…

No, I think maybe the first snap of the game, you want to be respectful of LT [Tomlinson]. Other than that, we just want to win the game. Whoever we think gives us the best opportunity to win, we’ll put those people on the field.

On if he will start Tomlinson for ceremonial purposes…

Yes, we’ll definitely start him.

On if he expects to see more fire out of Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie since they are facing their former team or if he thinks it will come naturally…

I think that is natural. I don’t think there’s any doubt. I think any competitor, what do you say to them? Let’s not say anything to them. Let’s let them kind of feel it themselves. Everybody is different. I know one thing, I had an old football coach that coached me in college. By the way, I was a Hall of Famer [smiling]. Anyway, he used to always, if a kid transferred from a school or whatever, he would play a guy.

I remember we had a running back. He hardly even played. When we played this other team he transferred from, he started him. The kid had like 160 yards. It’s something that has always stuck with me. I think those are special moments for guys. It’s not that it’s a bad thing, like, “I’m going to show that team.” I think getting to play in front of his former teammates is the biggest thing.

On if he would keep Tomlinson in the game if he performs well…

Yes, well, that would be a good problem to have.

On if he feels his comments will provide any extra motivation to San Diego…

I don’t think it does. I think it’s more the playoff game when you go back there. Just like we were driven that way when we would play Indianapolis or whoever beat us, that’s something that always drives you a little bit. If it does, we’ll see. I think everybody knows it was unintentional, but we’ll see.

On if Tomlinson has been what they envisioned when they signed him…

He’s everything I thought he’d be. He really is. I thought we were getting a guy that could really help us. The thing that he probably is, even more so, the kind of person he is. He’s a former NFL Man of the Year. You would assume he would be the kind of guy that he is. But wow, when you see it through your locker room, how he picks his teammates up, all that, builds them up, he’s been fantastic that way.

Then as a player, he’s been great. Last year, he was just shy of 1,000 yards rushing in the regular season. [He] did a great job in the passing [game]. [We] never played him in that last game where he would have gone over a thousand yards. I think that was impressive. This year, he’s had some huge moments for us already.

On what he thinks Tomlinson and Cromartie are feeling this week…

You kind of want to show off to your old team. I think that’s probably the biggest thing. Obviously, those guys had great, productive seasons in San Diego. I think that’s part of it, just showing your friends, former teammates that, “Hey, wow, watch me play.”

On if any of the players that were limited in practice may not play on Sunday…

No, I feel pretty good about them. I think all of them will play. We’ll see as it goes. Ropati, I think we still want to see him. I think, for the most part, we should be fine.

On how Mangold is progressing…

He never practiced again today. I think tomorrow, hopefully, he’ll get out there and be limited. Being that we kind of played on a Monday kind of knocked us back a day, but I’m definitely hopeful he plays.

On the focus this week after last week’s focus was stopping the losing streak and getting a win…

The same. We’re playing against an outstanding opponent, a team that’s a playoff-caliber team. We’re playing at home. We want to keep our win streak at home, playing in front of our fans, knowing we have the bye week next week to recharge our batteries. We have to put everything we have into this one. Obviously, we’ll see if that’s good enough. We think it will be, but we know it’s going to be a heck of a challenge. The team is 4-1, great combination of playing great on offense, great on defense. Their punter has punted 12 times this season. It’s going to be a big challenge.

On if Darrelle Revis will shadow Vincent Jackson or Malcom Floyd…

You know how we do things. If Lance Alworth was out there, maybe, but we don’t know. We don’t give away who we put him on.

On if he is ever concerned about his personality detracting from his on-field accomplishments…

I’m not really concerned about that. I just don’t want to take away from our team, our team’s preparation and things like that. I think that’s the biggest thing. I want to be myself. I want to be true to myself. The on-field accomplishments, I just want to win and at the end of the day, sure, I’d loved to be respected by my peers and things like that, but I just want to win. I’ll be happy if that’s the case.
