The Cardinals Stiffen Their Line With Faneca

All the talk of the Arizona Cardinals slipping from top spot in the NFC West might be a little premature after they picked up 9 times pro bowler Alan Faneca from the NY Jets. Faneca is an upgrade for them at Guard and although at 33 he is not a long term cure he has a season or two left in him and will be a great help to Matt Leinart as he attempts to make the step up from bit part player to starting QB. This looks a good signing and combined with a fairly good performance in the draft means that Arizona will not be whole lot worse a team this season despite several high profile departures.

Jets & Cardinals Swap Free Agent Kickers

In a slightly unorthodox move the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets could wind up  swapping kickers in the 2010 season

Former Jets kicker Jay Feely has already signed with Arizona, causing them to release previous kicker Neil Rackers. Now he is reported to be on his way to New York to discuss a contract with the Jets.

Rackers who became a free agent had ben in discussion with the Cardinals but they instead chose to go with Feely giving him a two-year deal worth about $3 million. Rackers was coming off of a Career high 94% success so this seems a slightly strange move by the Cardinals who in Jay Feely have a journeyman kicker who has not been a great success at any of his former clubs. Obviously not a case of the devil you know for Arizona.

Arizona Cardinals Stiffen Their Defense

In what should prove to be a shrewd move the Arizona Cardinals have acquired the services of Pro Bowl Line Backer Joey Porter in a big money deal. Porter has had a distinguished career at both Pittsburgh and Miami and with 92 career sacks the only currently active NFL player with more sacks is  ex Dolphins team mate Jason Taylor.  This looks a much better signing to me than the Derek Anderson move and maybe Arizona still have some ambition after all.

Derek Anderson Heads For The Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals now devoid of Veteran Quarter Back Kurt Warner have turned their attention to Cleveland Browns reject Derek Anderson to fill the void. Given the alternative is former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart who has miserably failed to live up to his potential then it becomes slightly less of a surprise.

Arizona managed to get good service out of Kurt Warner who was badly treated by both The Rams and NY Giants but he was a proven QB with a Super Bowl winners ring to back it up and in my opinion a career worthy of a place in the hall of fame. Anderson on the other hand has had one good season back in 2007 and couldn’t hold down the starters job at the Browns thereafter which is hardly a ringing endorsement. Maybe lightening will strike twice and Arizona will make a proverbial silk purse out of Anderson like they did with Warner, but to my mind this shows an amazing lack of ambition just as they had become the major force in the NFC West. Only time will tell if they were right , but one thing certain from this signing is that Matt Leinart’s career is effectively over.
