Favre Gets a Painful Reintroduction To The NFL

In a brief return to the field Brett Favre was handed a painful reminder of what is to come this year as his 4 play stint ended with a heavy sack for a 10 yard loss.

After 3 unspectacular downs he failed to spot ta 49ers blitz and ended up being hit hard by 49ers pro bowler Patrick Willis for a 10 yard loss. This was enough for him in his 1st game since the brutal loss in the NFC Championship game and he was replaced by Travaris Jackson.

Brad Childers hadn’t planned to give Favre much game time so there is nothing to read into this and Favre will probably feature a litte more in their next pre season game.

The match was won 15-10 by San Francisco and although its only a pre-season game they did show signs of being close to a playoff team. Last season the 49ers lost several close away games including 27-24 against the Vikings and this cost them any playoff chances they had. If they can show a bit more tenacity this season they can probably win a weak NFC West.

Brian Westbrook Takes Backup RB Job At San Francisco

Ex Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Brian Westbrook has chosen to join the San Francisco 49ers where he will have to be content with the back up job to Frank Gore. Westbrook had the chance of joining the St Louis Rams, but given they are likely to struggle this season he has decided to forgo the chance of being started to be with a winning team.

This is a nice move by the 49ers who having managed 8-8 last season will fancy their chances of ending their 7 season play off drought in a weak looking NFC West. The one year deal is worth $1.25 million and there are success bonuses on top possibly doubling this figure. This acquisition will be a big confidence boost for the 49ers who will now have some depth on the roster and Westbrook’s undoubted leadership skills should also be a big boost for the younger squad members.

This should be their season to shine in the NFC West, given that Arizona have lost a lot of starters and neither the Seahawks or Rams are in a position to do anything this season.

Packman Jones Still Looking For A Home

Talented but controversial Corner Adam “Packman” Jones is still seeking a team for the 2010 season having been released by the Dallas Cowboys in 2009 following his NFL suspension for misconduct. He trained with the Cincinnati Bengals in February and is now planning a second attempt at impressing at a pro-day style workout in New Orleans.

Currently the San Fransisco 49ers and The Detroit Lions have expressed some interest and the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans saints are expected to have representatives attend. Jones is undoubtedly a talented corner back but comes with a big health warning due to his past alcohol fueled transgressions. If he has finally sorted himself out he woul be a great signing for any franchise.
