Hall of Fame Game Cancelled

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced late Thursday evening that this year’s Hall of Fame game featuring the Rams and Bears will not be played as the league and players continue to hammer out a collective bargaining agreement.

The Hall of Fame released the following statement last night on the game’s cancellation.

“While the Pro Football Hall of Fame is disappointed by the news that the NFL/Hall of Fame Game will not be played, we appreciate the effort that was made on our behalf by the league and players right up until the last minute.

Although the game is an important part of the 10-day, 18-event Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, it is important to remember that the most important event is the Enshrinement Ceremony which will be held on Saturday night August 6 as scheduled.

Obviously, the loss of this year’s game will have a significant adverse economic impact on the Hall of Fame and the Canton community. We believe, however, that the long-term stability this new agreement will provide will be beneficial not only to the league and the players, but to the fans and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

While the game will not take place, all of the festivities of the weekend including the enshrinement of Rams’ Marshall Faulk and Les Richter will go on as planned.

Stlouisrams.com will provide complete coverage from Canton.

Key Terms of NFL-Approved Tentative Agreement

If approved by the players, the NFL’s new deal would cover the 2011-2020 seasons and the 2021 draft. It would include the following key terms as released by the NFL:

ECONOMICS:

- Salary cap plus benefits of $ 142.4 million per club in 2011 ($ 120.375 million for salary and bonus) and at least that amount in 2012 and 2013.

- Beginning in 2012, salary cap to be set based on a combined share of “all revenue,” a new model differentiated by revenue source with no expense reductions. Players will receive 55 percent of national media revenue, 45 percent of NFL Ventures revenue and 40 percent of local club revenue.

- Also beginning in 2012, annual “true up” to reflect revenue increases or decreases versus projections.

- Clubs receive credit for actual stadium investment and up to 1.5 percent of revenue each year.

- Player share must average at least 47 percent for the 10-year term of the agreement.

- Leaguewide commitment to cash spending of 99 percent of the cap in 2011 and 2012.

- For the 2013-2016 seasons, and again for the 2017-2020 seasons, the clubs collectively will commit to cash spending of at least 95 percent of the cap.

- Each club will be committed to cash spending of 89 percent of the cap from 2013-2016 and 2017-2020.

- Increases to minimum salaries of 10 percent in Year 1 with continuing increases each year of the agreement.

PLAYER AND HEALTH SAFETY:

- Reducing the offseason program by five weeks, reducing organized team activities from 14 to 10;

- Limiting on-field practice time and contact;

- Limiting full-contact practices in the preseason and regular season;

- Increasing number of days off for players.

- Opportunity for current players to remain in the player medical plan for life.

- An enhanced injury protection benefit of up to $ 1 million of a player’s salary for the contract year after his injury and up to $ 500,000 in the second year after his injury.

- No change to the 16-game regular-season/4-game preseason format until at least 2013; any subsequent increase in the number of regular-season games must be made by agreement with the NFL Players Association.

- $ 50 million per year joint fund for medical research, healthcare programs and NFL Charities, including NFLPA-related charities.

RETIRED PLAYER BENEFITS:

- Over the next 10 years, there will be additional funding for retiree benefits of between $ 900 million and $ 1 billion. The largest single amount, $ 620 million, will be used for a new “Legacy Fund,” which will be devoted to increasing pensions for pre-1993 retirees.

- Other improvements will be made to post-career medical options, the disability plan, the 88 Plan, career transition and degree completion programs, and the Player Care Plan.

DRAFT AND FREE AGENCY SYSTEM:

- An annual draft of seven rounds, plus compensatory picks for teams which lose free agents.

- Unrestricted free agency for players after four accrued seasons; restricted free agency for players with three accrued seasons.

- Free agency exceptions for franchise and transition players.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPENSATION SYSTEM:

- All drafted players sign four-year contracts.

- Undrafted free agents sign three-year contracts.

- Maximum total compensation per draft class.

- Limited contract terms.

- Strong anti-holdout rules.

- Clubs have option to extend the contract of a first-round draftee for a fifth year, based on agreed-upon tender amounts.

- Creation of new fund to redistribute, beginning in 2012, savings from new rookie pay system to current and retired player benefits and a veteran player performance pool.

2011-2012 TRANSITION RULES:

- Special transition rules to protect veteran players in 2011. All teams will have approximately $ 3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay available to fund veteran player salaries.

- Each club may “borrow” up to $ 3 million in cap room from a future year, which may be used to support veteran player costs.

- In 2012, each club may “borrow” up to $ 1.5 million in cap room from a future year. Both these amounts would be repaid in future years.

OTHER:

- No judicial oversight of the agreement. Neutral arbitrators jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA will resolve disputes as appropriate.

- Settlement of all pending litigation.

Faulk “Teams Up” with Benjamin Foundation and American Dog Rescue To Raise $10,000 in Joplin, MO

JOPLIN, MO (July 18, 2011) – Executive and philanthropist Arthur E. Benjamin today announced that Marshall Faulk, Pro Football Hall of Famer-elect and St. Louis Rams great, has joined his team to raise much needed funds for animal rescue efforts and disaster relief in Joplin, MO. With his recent launch of a national, viral, social media campaign, Benjamin will donate $ 1 to the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) for every Facebook fan who ‘likes’ the American Dog Rescue page (http://www.facebook.com/AmericanDogRescue) – up to $ 10,000 will be donated by Benjamin through his foundations, The Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation and American Dog Rescue.

“The disasters that struck Joplin and the surrounding areas in Missouri were devastating,” said Benjamin. “And while immediate efforts were made on the ground to rescue animals in danger, to recover lost animals, and to reunite families with their pets, there is still so much to be done. The awe of the situation struck the hearts of Americans, which is why it is so powerful that a viral fundraising campaign like this be launched so people from around the country can help. Through the unwavering efforts of the HSMO, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), The Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation, and American Dog Rescue, there is no doubt that we will make a difference in the aftermath of this devastation. Never has one click, one ‘like,’ one fan been so meaningful to thousands of lives – both animal and human.”

The funds raised from the Facebook campaign will assist to alleviate the costs accumulated from the immediate actions taken during the disaster relief including but not limited to staff, material and supply costs. Even before the official request from State Emergency Management Agency in Missouri, the HSMO Disaster Response Team was preparing for deployment. Within 24 hours of the tornado, a 23-member team experienced in animal rescue and recovery, emergency sheltering and veterinary medicine arrived on the scene. Team response included eight trucks and animal carrier vehicles, two horse trailers, a disaster supply trailer, HSMO’s climate-controlled Animal Rescue Trailer, and an emergency-equipped RV so the team could be self-supporting when necessary. Field assessments began immediately with team members moving and sifting through dangerous debris and rubble to locate stray and injured animals. The team also responded to search and rescue calls from persons who survived the storm but could not find pets or had to leave them behind. More than 200 animals were rescued and taken to emergency shelter in the first week following the storm. In conjunction with Joplin Animal Control, the HSMO also operated a co-location shelter for now-homeless persons and their pets housed at the American Red Cross shelter. Efforts continue throughout Missouri to rescue animals from the recent disasters such as the tornado, and the even more recent flooding issues that plague the region. Immediate response efforts were also contributed by HSUS and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to ensure that as many animals as possible received necessary and prompt attention – these organizations continue to support the on-going efforts in Joplin and the surrounding areas.
